Lore

As the commercialization of space expanded rapidly in the latter half of the 21st century the need arose for a light cargo hauler to ferry supplies to and from various smaller mining outposts and lunar bases. This need was fulfilled with the introduction of the MULE light cargo hauler by Aurora Orbital Enterprises. The MULE required much less infrastructure than the established freighters and could more easily handle the navigational hazards surrounding many asteroid mining outposts.

In 2098 when Apex Industries formed from the merging of Aurora Orbital Enterprises and various other companies the MULE became the de facto light capacity cargo hauler of Apex industries. In 2127 the MULE began to benefit from a series of overhauls built around the inclusion of recently developed Jump Drive technology into the MULE package.
With the inclusion of Jump Drives the MULE helped lead the second wave of human colonization in the outer Sol and Alpha Centauri systems. The MULE was perfect for emergency and other time sensitive supply runs to remote and sparsely populated outposts where it would have otherwise been inefficient to send larger cargo freighters.

With the outbreak of the Syphon Group in the Alpha Centauri system in 2132 and the increase in piracy and raiding the MULE was upgraded with heavier defensive armaments to ward off would-be raiders.

In its current incarnation the MULE travels with a crew of 1 to 4, consisting of a pilot, two technicians, and a medical officer, although the medical officer position is often left unfulfilled for short journeys.
