Great oldschool janky shooter, its a lot of fun, so fun I made a guide for it check it out.

To go over more detail on this game, its 60 cents on sell, has secrets and 18 levels, and has some good music and atmosphere. Is it jank, is it glitchy, is it going to lock up and suck you into a wall? YES! Save often tho, its not that big a deal.

Marathon 2 is even better than marathon 1 imo, but I love the first one. So that's saying a lot!

So I've tried some metroidvania style games outside the actual metroid-castlevania games and not many really resonated with me. 2 in particular were ori and rain world. I found them to be way to difficult to be enjoyable least for me. Rain world especially was just way to hard with the die, eat, die, eat, struggle to build up your bar to even get clearance to proceed to another extremely hard area. So I gave up both in frustration, ori was just to damn kill you over and over with hard jumps instantly. Ori was not as bad as rain world however because least it don't set you back 2 hours for dying.

So coupled with all the prove yourself platformers these days like end is ni, and meatboy, I was growing a little untrusting of what people tell me is a good platformer these days. I loved a hat in time, but that's more mario, gather the star pieces platformer. Most of the really good ones I still find to be the classics for pacing themselves and not expecting really ridiculous feats. Not all of course some oldschool stuff is severly hard. But as far as metroids and the metroid style castlevanias (sotn, aria) I could not find a single new one that held the same attention from me. So I gave this one a try, and it held up to all my expectations.

One thing, I was a bit of a skeptic at first with this game, it does start out a little basic with jump and shoot. But give it some time the game really hits its stride mid to end game. I have not actually beat this game yet, but got one more boss on the achievements left so I think I'm close to done. One thing this game does really well tho, it really manages to be a good mid point, inbetween challenge, satisfaction, and accomplishment. Meaning its not super easy, its puzzling, but its not frustrating. Its fun to play and explore, does some interesting things with oldschool nes style graphics I haven't seen before, and has interesting atmosphere and story. Also mixes things up a lot from what metroid did. I wouldn't say its better than metroid either just different. In metroid, well samus was a suit, you knew what to expect. Trace on the other hand is a scientist, his upgrades are not really predictable and it would be to much of a spoiler to tell you about his upgrades. Lets just say it manipulates 2d platforming in some of the ways samus did but in more trippy theoretical, less physical ways. For example he can phase shift through walls by tapping directions. Which adds a whole new dimension of platforming explortation.

The game is not prove yourself, its actually quite enjoyable. Its an atmospheric, puzzling game, and beating a speed run or not dying even once could be hard. But just playing it through its more of a thinking mans game and less of a twitch platforming prove yourself with jump tricks game. That's what I love about it, so does it hold up to metroid and castlevania? I would say it does and the price on sell or not is reasonable, its already sold axiom 2 for me. So if you want a good metroidvania, that's more metroid than vania, this is a good choice.

The keyboard configuration is absolutely awful and the default is no better. Going back to default doesn't even work. This is unplayable... Now the keyboard configs going crazy and won't let me input anything, I can't do a thing with this... Why?

This was one hell of a game, its challenging, it makes you work for it, it doesn't hand you anything, there's no save anywhere, the puzzles are notorious... And yet, its amazing.

The graphics, story, atmosphere, music, enemies, weapons, they are extremely well done and ahead of its time. Is this as good as doom? Yes, sure, but its not the same as doom. If you go in expecting grim dark, that's not exactly what marathons about. It is nightmarish and weird at times, it involves aliens invading human colony ships, one in particular called marathon. But I won't go into the story to much.

Speaking of story, this game has one, and its possibly the best one I've seen from the mid 90s. Why? Well its just text of course, but its actually engaging. Like reading a good sci fi novel. Its one where you read slower, to comprehend the deeper meanings. It really is a complex and interesting story.

The gameplay? Starts out kinda slow I will admit, but each level gets better and better, they really do. There's tons of workshop support, and its a real classic. I liked it even more than doom1-2, its about the same quality to me as most 3d realms games, but has a lot more content and storyline. Heretic is also one I love, but this games held my attention to the end. Also the setting is more slick high tech sci fi with some alien stuff as well. If you want more blood splatter and grim dark this might not excite you the same way it did me, I loved it however.

Strongly recommend it, now back to marathon 2.

Extremely boring expansion compared to the excellent russian campaign, only buy this if you love coh2 and wanna complete it. If you are expecting the russian campaign then you will be dissapointed. Its stock as hell, map conquering grind where you just throw guys at stuff, or get snuck up on by fast and irritating stipulation losses. Replay again to do it right, because time slog of course. The russian campaign was amazing, was expecting more when I bought this.

This games awesome, if you're on the fence on this try the demo its what made me wanna buy the full game. The demo is also really awesome and has achievements. So let me get the negatives out of the way, I'm mentioning the negatives cause I've seen some gamers bring these up as reasons why Hrot isn't up to the quality of other boomer shooters, even though I disagree, I haven't played to many boomer shooters to be a fair judge of this. I've mostly played the classic game, doom, duke, turok, quake, sin, goldeneye, etc etc..

These are not my negatives I happen to love the game myself which I'll go over in my review after this, but from what I've read people say, not enough weapons, and no multi player. I'm not going to go over the other more superficial reasons people bash it like gun sound effects cause I actually don't agree with that at all love the sound effects and music myself. But yea it could have multi player, would love to play co-op with a friend. But a game doesn't need online modes attached to be a good game. As for lack of weapons, kinda disagree with that too. Sure the first episode seems kinda quake like on the amount of weapons, but they are all great fun weapons you learn to use strategically. But episode 2 and 3 add more than I expected in weapons, so its not like all you get is episode 1.

Now onto the positives, amazing atmosphere, great simplistic graphics, and good music and unlockables. Its one of those kinda games you really don't mind it being SP because there's a lot to find and unlock. You also have a level select mission progress style going here. Sure you can play an ongoing game and unlock all the health and weapons you wanna keep along the way. But any level you unlock can be played anytime you want again after completing it, on any difficulty you want. This adds a kind of mission structure much like goldeneye and other older shooters. Where you can replay and perfect any level you beat currently. This is a very welcome addition and I wish more shooters would do this, as it makes it fun to replay and perfect the game.

Its a very long game, 3 episodes, and even after you beat it once on easy or normal, there's hard modes, and secrets, a whole lot of secrets. You can also unlock new modes, collections, a bestiary, and many weird and obscure soviet jokes and information. Did not know who this corrupt bastard gustav was at first but I know now. This games awesome and well worth 10-20$ and it goes above 20 hours of gameplay easily. Least for me, if you can beat this and all its difficulty modes in under 20 hours you got some beast fps skills but for most of us its gonna be a long and entertaining game. Do not play this with new shooter expectations, its fun but you gotta understand the bleak and void nature of games like quake and chasm, its suppose to be weird, its suppose to be soviet, its suppose to look like a world bordering on modern pop but with dingy mixed in. Just the fact that the guy can survive on bubblegum is hilarious, and blows bubbles in fp

Also the game combines a lot of mechanics from half life, quake, chasm, goldeneye, and many other shooters of the era. If you like oldschool shooters, get this. Also the engine is not some reused engine from other games, the dev completely made this engine on his own. And even though its purposely oldschool, there is some modern touches to the jagged pixels, nice atmospheric effects, good particles, lots of devastating explosions, it still looks and plays very nice despite the purposely oldschool graphics.

A really awesome oldschool style rpg. Altho it has a lot of modern features, and the graphics are very nice. Everything runs well, and its got cards/achievements. For the price on sell or regular price its a great game and well worth it. Although I just started, one thing to let new players know. The character creation works on a traditional dnd style dice roll. So keep rerolling till you get better stats, otherwise you might find the start hard. I did until I realized it was based on dice roll. Once you get a powerful character going it gets very fun.
