Poorly optimized bare boned port of a classic.
Love the game, hate this version. You're better off with the CD, same thing.
Except this steam versions even worse.

With KOTOR2 supporting full widescreen resolution support, mods, achievements etc.. It makes no sense that the first game with better reviews gets snubbed. Played both, I hate KOTOR2 its boring, the characters are dull or overly edgy, its straightforward, can barely be called an rpg. KOTOR2 sucks I dont like that game at all. Love KOTOR1. But if you want both games you are better off with the steam KOTOR2 sadly. KOTOR1 is treated like garbage and it made the series. Whats worse is they want 10$ for it, same price as KOTOR2.

If it sounds like it makes no sense, it doesn't.. The workarounds to get widescreen don't work and some methods are downright suspect and could cause a VAC ban. No thanks I'll wait for an update before I ever boot this up again, it hurts my head and my eyes.

Terrible version of KOTOR1 don't buy it, get the cd instead.

Game looks nice for the price. To bad it can't be optimized to 1920/1080 support.
With a game like this, made fairly recent, its kind of lame. I don't want to play a 3d racing game in a box.

None of the workarounds online work either, just make me have to revaluate the files over and over which results in more downloading. Games a headache, and it looks nice, has some pretty good weather and water effects, but playing in a box really irks me like lots of other steam games that are poorly optimized.

Armed to the gears is quite a nice game, especially for the price. It is single player, but I don't mind that as long as its a fun game with good strategy gameplay. But its not just an rts or tower defense, its also a top down acting game, somewhat like diablo or other top down games.

You can control your mech, and also the cursor allowing you to play both an action game, and an rts base building hybrid. You also get items, grenades, missiles, health packs, armor etc. The game has a lot of different defensive structures, weapons, even air to ground attacks like nukes and napalm, its graphics are also very nice for how big the game is.

For anyone who's a fan of mechs and wants a good mech game to play, enjoy the graphics and gameplay, And want another game with badass mechs and lots of explosions as well as involving gameplay. Its really good so far, better than most games its price imo, especially newer ones. So if you want a good single player mech game with a lot of replay and a challenging campaign I recommend it.

I will add more to this review after I've beat the game, which I should manage as the games really fun.

Usually I don't expect much for 1$ or 50cents, but, it really was a little better than I expected. At the price I expected an unplayable glitchy mess. But its really not bad, its not a long game, barely an hour or 2, but it has some extra modes that increase the life span. I've only beat the regular game so, haven't tried the other modes. Its not much of a gameplay game, its more of a move around, enjoy the creepy atmosphere and scares (there are a few jump scares, and some violence, its surprisingly dark, and not light by any means). This said, it does have a few gameplay segments, stealth, a maze to navigate, and a few others. But as far as gameplay goes its not really heavy. This is more of an interactive creepypasta then a game really.

I do recommend it for steam horror fans, there's some things to be gained here for the price. Cards are worth a pretty good amount for this price, worth more than some AAA games. There's some cool stuff to use on a creepy steam profile if you craft a badge, the game also has some extra modes to play after you beat it. Is it amnesia good? Well no, its basically kinda like amnesia just more bare boned. Altho... As far as what I've played from both amnesias, imo anyway, everyone is free to disagree, I did find it creepier and more Fed up than amnesia.

Do i recommend it? Sure, for any horror fan on steam if this game peaked your curiosity then buy it, at a dollar or better 50 cents you can't really go wrong here, you'll get some scary creepy visuals, even if its a bit brief. Least there's extra modes which not every horror game offers.

Surprisingly good indie horror game glad I bought it, just expect it to be an hour or 2 nightmare and not a never ending one.

WARNING

If you are easily spooked by jump scares, or strong violent imagery, including light torture execution, be wary going in as there are some pretty strong scenes. Not the most mind warping stuff imaginable but it could maybe irk some people. The jump scares are not the worst I ever saw, its not really like they'll be right in your face as soon as you turn around but there are a few jump scare moments, so if you get spooked easily use caution going in.

I love the legacy series and the major reason I'm thumbing up this review is cause of that.

All the familiar voice acting, story, characters, and tropes of the first game, plus hints of soul reaver, are all in this game. At a dollar on sell, if you are a legacy fan you will want to add this to the collection.

Bit of a warning, if you're new to the series, and only played SR or blood omen1, don't bother with this yet. Get soul reaver2, or defiance, this game sucks, pun intended.
Why pun intended? Because you will literally suck everything..

The game has a strange level up system that makes kains health increase from sucking blood. So you literally have to eat everyone you see. It sucks, its a terrible idea for a system. In BO1 special items and viles gave you xp, in this its just eat everyone you see from little old ladies to knights. It just gets old, Kains an edgy villain, no doubt, he's ruthless. But something just feels odd about a super powerful badass vampire chasing old ladies around for power. Its a bad kain game, its not fun..
And the moves and finishers, grab executions, are ok but nothing special. Sneak up on a knight and slash his belly open only to see red mist splash our of an unaltered breastplate. Makes little to no sense and looks terrible in every realistic way. No intestines or gore, just blood, blood, and occasionally a blood soaked head. The actions stiff and weird, it plays like no other ps2/xbox game at that time. Devil may cry, ninja gaiden, even LOK defiance, it doesn't play like those, it has a stiff zelda rip off lock on system that plays terribly. Even comparing it to zelda 64 is unfair. It only really shares the lock on system.

The puzzles are made very simply and nothing like soul reavers, you shouldn't find yourself getting stuck often. Well except for the annoying blood farming, stealth, fight through a bunch of hard knight opponents who have a strong advantage against you areas. The puzzles are not the hard part of this game by any means.

Combat is repetitive and its based on a checkpoint system which I hate. Its also tough at times, not so hard as unbeatable but annoying when you have farmed so much blood just to get killed by cheap paladins.
The gameplays just terrible, and they only give you about 5 skills, no magic, no extra equipment, altho kain does change looks throughout the chapters. Its pretty bare boned and terrible compared to BO1. Would of been great if they'd just made it like BO1 with 3d, even this system would of worked if it was open, with more magic and other things. But the way this game is structured, you basically do a lot ALOT of the same stuff.

Most of all drinking blood, lots and lots of blood, so much so that it starts to lose all meaning, and draining the blood doesn't look badass or anything just routine.

The game has some positive outside the initials I mentioned for fans. Some of the stealth kills are cool, but not that brutal or anything really. I suppose they could be brutal if the game wasn't just blood mist and had real gore effects. The grab finishing moves are also sometimes cool, especially the axe.

But all in all, this is the weakest Kain for a reason, its utterly terrible. But one bit of praise I really wanna give this game since I do love the character and series is, I love the architecture and atmosphere, the fogging, structure of the towns and buildings, art on the wall, and other little touches are nice. They did put some work into the surroundings and how they look. The game gameplay and battle system, as stiff as it is at time, could of been much better if it had more options. More moves, skills, magic, weapons, even consumable items like BO1, but it just has hacking and stealth kills. Pretty lame. But I do give major points to the surroundings.

I haven't beat it yet but I'm in the 5th chapter and I've seen enough to justify my review of it, I'll edit this review later once I'm done.

This is one of my favorite horror games of all time. I'm a big fan of creepy atmosphere horror games, with supernatural or monstrous themes. I'm not the biggest fan of violent horror, with torture aspects, or slashers that go after innocent people. A few are good, like the movie Maniac, because they had good endings and showed the outcome of being a psychopath. I'm not into the ones that are just about simple violence, or torture. Just making it clear to anyone reading this review of what kind of horror I like so they can kinda understand what to expect from darkwood.
I will try to avoid spoilers since I don't want to give away any of this storyline, but its done in a way that is amazing, and mysterious all at the same time. The storyline is told in so many subtle and hidden ways that you will still find different bits of lore well into 60-70 hours of gameplay. Even after you beat the game.. Theres more to find out, and many wiki and theory pages on the internet elaborating the storyline.
What is the storyline? Well as I said I don't want to post to many spoilers, but as the name suggests its about some very dark and creepy woods. Why are they like this? Well thats whats so genius about this game its not an enemy that you would expect. The game is an emotional roller coaster from different perspectives and no one in the game is a true villain or badguy, well besides maybe one, or if you count wolf 2. That's whats so different to me about this game, its from the control and viewpoint of one character, but it tells the story of many through his perspective.

As you explore the game, you will find npcs, when you do you can talk to them, or kill them, if you want. That's just part of the open ended nature of this game, its not smart to kill some npcs as they help you through the entire game. Especially the trader one of your greatest allys. There's also reasons not to kill rivals and enemies as well, for example a certain doctor trys to kill you, but if you spare him you can buy embryos later from him that enhance your health. If he dies you miss out on that. So you will want to think about trying to interact with everyone in the game differently.

But I could go on and on about the story depth and characters. Lets move on to the gameplay.

It is awesome and highly addictive. It is one of the most fun horror games I've played in a long time. And I haven't played every scary creepy horror game but I've played quite a few. Resident evil, eternal darkness, shadowman, the legacy of kain series, amnesia, silent hill and more.. And this game is right alongside them for creepy atmosphere and horror. Maybe even more so to a point, for me.. Well its not one of those games that will scar your mind forever. I really think if you are a jaded horror movie fan or have seen a lot of scary ♥♥♥♥ and violence.. Don't go into this expecting the most horrifying thing in the world that will ruin the emotional impact of darkwood thats not what this games about.

Its about presenting a nightmare, a group of peoples nightmare, and your own way of finding a way out of this nightmare.
A nightmare thats more edgar alan poe or lovecraft then hellraiser or other more brutal horror. Its hard to explain, but the horror here is more the fear of slow rot and decay, as well as social stagnation, than actual bloody and gruesome horror.
That's not to say there isn't a lot in darkwood tho. The woods have some kind of way supernaturally of morphing the woods and taking human beings and turning them into freakish monsters. Everything from a centipede human hybrid, to a monster who splits a human down the middle to reveal a new huge mouth of jagged teeth. And one of the more creepy ones, a human spider composed of different human limbs and body parts. The monsters are very well thought out, and there's more than just enemy monsters, there's also a few other surprises.

The best way to explain the gameplay would be, smash tv, resident evil, zelda1 gameplay hybrid with defend the base gameplay as well as diablo2 like item hording. This game combines some of the most genius games in history in an extremely satisfying way, it is a masterpiece of game design. And I'm not a huge fan of twin stick shooters either, but the way this game was created.. Its not a shoot waves of enemies game like smash tv, it just uses its basic control setup. Its done in a way that feels balanced and realistic. And the way the guns work in the game is very well done, its not hard at all to use the firearms its some of the best firearm controls I've played from a top down perspective since metal gear solid 2 SOL. Its that good imo. And the elements of zelda and resident evil combined. Explore a map like zelda, find health upgrades like embryos, enhance your character through gear and equipment upgrades, and horde ammo and survival gear like medicine just like RE.

Its just an awesome unique and downright creepy game and I love it.

That all said, negatives? Well its not a short game for its genre I unlocked all achievements around 60 plus hours so expect to be here a while if you wanna play this game to its fullest. Altho I would of loved for it to be a lot longer as its kinda over before you know it, even if it is longer than other horror games... It leaves you wanting more cause the gameplay is that good.

That's about the only real negative I can think of is it left me wanting more, which really isn't a negative at all.
And one more thing I wanna praise this amazing game for, the mechanics for defending your base/safehouse at night are simply amazing. Its really the meat of the game. While exploring during the day is fun, it sometimes meets its limit when you find everything. I kinda wish there was a way to take a nap during the day simply to play these awesome night scenerios. Its intense, put a table in the way of a boarded up window, hide behind it, shotgun ready, as infected savages and huge dogs try to bust down your window, waiting shotgun ready, capping and reloading quickly as to not leave yourself open. Then a crazed spiritual being comes and screams down the hall, creating an imprint of a skull on your screen, then the lights go out. These are the kind of events and gameplay you will get during the night and they are AWESOME!

Do I recommend this game to horror fans? I recommend this game to all gamers who can take an emotional storyline about a lot of grey flawed yet sympathetic people in a very bad nightmare situation that was really none of their faults. Its a game about survival and questions of right and wrong, its one of the best games I've played on steam.

If you like rpg mechanics and an actual rpg system don't buy this game, the game is literally don't fight anything for the good ending and is really just reading a bunch of lame jokes and watching nes graphics. Its really boring and I can't even bring myself to start it up, and I feel bad cause I kinda wanna give it a chance but it makes me feel zzzzzzzzzz... Sorry I fell asleep.

Horrible game, try and shoot stuff in 1st person while racing, all looking jaggy as hell and headache inducing. There's no game here, its garbage, wipeout on SNES was better.

Bit of a warning do not say this game sucks on their forum they banned me for 5 months for saying this game sucks and wipeout was better in the 90s, one sentence, an OPINION.

Banned for 5 months.
Some defensive developer i guess or mod who just militantly loves this garbage game, I dunno, just don't ever tell them the game sucks.
