Short but I was hooked the whole time

Die to a strafing run, then respawn only to immediately die to a bombing run. 10/10 I'm addicted

I personally wouldn't recommend this game at full price. But I would recommend it on sale

The characters in this game are well written. I chose to play Howard more on the glass half full side and I really enjoyed the kind and caring dialogue options for Howard. Clarrisa is intimidating even when "being" polite. Renee genuinely cares for Howard. Larry is a true friend and I felt genuinely disappointed in him when I found out he was still on drugs. There's a dog eugenicist that made me wish the game had the option for Howard to beat him up.

The visuals are stunning and the OST is amazing. They combine to make all the locations in the game have incredible atmospheres to them. Granville and the Homeless settlement especially. I also really appreciate the dialogue system (being able to see all the previous dialogue in the conversation) it's very similar to Disco Elysium's dialogue UI and is something I wish more games would do. The game starts off strong in the prologue and act 1 and builds a conspiracy that had me expecting True Detective season 1 type sh*t. That quickly takes a back seat after a certain event happens. The fact that the game doesn't keep to the same style the whole way through IS NOT why I'm not recommending it to be clear.

The reason I don't recommend this game at full price is because for such a heavily story driven game, how the game concludes made me actually say out loud to my monitor "Is that it?" both in the sense that the game only took me 4.9 hours to complete (having paid nearly £20 for) and the fact that the story just doesn't conclude in any meaningful way (for me). How did Howard get beyond the wall? How do Renee and Claudia work together to overthrow the apes? Why don't the apes allow people beyond the wall in the first place? WTF happened to humans? It feels like the game is missing an act 6 that answers the questions the player still has at the end of act 5 or at least does more with the pretty great world building egg nut did throughout the game. Unless there is going to be a backbone 2 in which case I'm still let down with how they ended this game.

All in all a very interesting detective game that for me wasn't able to stick the landing.

The dialogue is dumb as hell in a lot of parts (mostly Ethan's) and the story left me scratching my head a few times towards the end of the game but I had a lot of fun playing it. Took me 8 and a half hours to complete on standard difficulty. If you liked RE:7 or RE:4 then get it.

Only game I've ever 100% completed.
