With the status quo, harnessing fusion energy in the near future is of utmost importance. With excessive carbon emissions growing ever more detrimental towards both humanity and the natural world, a dramatic shift in civilizations’ methods of electricity generation is required to maintain a habitable planet. Fusion is an answer - perhaps the best currently available.
The abundant nature of the fundamental input— - hydrogen— - designates fusion as a means of sustainable energy generation, one that would power humanity for billions of years with the materials available on Earth alone. Reducing environmentally destructive byproducts would dramatically cut pollution, globally increasing the quality of life and preserving the biosphere. No radioactive materials are produced, eliminating the risk of radioactive pollution while easing public fear of events similar to the Chernobyl disaster. The generation of electricity by means of fusion is the holy grail of addressing the paramount danger to modern society.
Should a successful method of fusion be developed, and should efficient plants be designed, the final hurdle in the shift towards a remodeled infrastructure of electricity in the world will be mounting support. With the precedence of extensive lobbying in the market of electricity, experts must be capable of and willing to garner support and to correct misinformation as it arises.
Through my career, I strive for two results: to impact the world and to enjoy my work. Engineering provides a means of combining these objectives; as an engineer, I will pursuecreate tangible developments society can utilize, while employing multidisciplinary subjects I will never tire of.
Beyond a human impact, engineering provides a means of creative expression. Designing and creating projects envelops both the logical and creative sides of myself, allowing me to invest the entirety of myself into my work. A career in engineering would not be a grind or feel like a necessity of life, it would be enjoying a passion of mine that encompasses several facets of being.
