Bobo the Cat is one of the best games! When it was originally released on Itchio, I couldn't stop playing it. It took me around 21 hours to complete the game 100%, and I loved it so much that I replayed it afterwards. It's extremely huge for a free game, but it manages to stay exciting and interesting the whole time.

The creator calls it a "Marioid", because it's a Metroidvania but many of the level design elements are similar to the 2D Mario games. I would say the most Mario-like parts are in the early game. Later on when you have more abilities, the levels become more complex and start to feature a varied mix of puzzle and action challenges.

The first third of the game is very fun and filled with creative mechanics and interesting levels, but the point where the game went from "great" to "amazing" for me was around 7 hours in. Bobo the Cat starts out with typical platformer themes for its areas, like a jungle, a cave, and a snowy mountain, but eventually starts to mix in strange areas with sinister monsters and an alien feel. It starts to feel less like a colorful platforming romp and more like a grand and mysterious adventure.

And even though this shift happens after you've already played the game for many hours, the game simply gets better from there. In addition to the more varied area themes, Bobo the Cat keeps introducing fun and surprising new abilities and mechanics throughout the whole game. I wasn't just excited to see more of the world, but also to see what new abilities or strange obstacles will pop up next. Sometimes long games get tiresome after you play them for a while, and you start to wish it was over, but I never felt this with Bobo the Cat. I was always excited to see what's next.

I don't think everyone will like Bobo the Cat, because it's a somewhat difficult game, and it feels slow-paced early on when you don't have many abilities. The slow pace combined with the occasionally strict checkpoint placement can be discouraging. However, it's personally one of my favourite games and a game I'll never forget. If you give up on it, you're missing out on an incredible game. It's free to try, so you should see if you will like it too.
