This is a lot of fun. Its pinball...and its not. Okay, it really is pinball but it manages to make.....I dont know if I dare call it an RPG but....there are a lot of elements to it that make it feel like a "proper" fantasy game. I like pinball but a solidly pinball-only game wouldn't hold my attention as much as this. Sure, you are firing pinballs for 95% of the time but it feels like so much more of a game. I know this is not making much sense but my recommendation is try this and you will see what I mean.

Tedium Midaeum

Midas gold? Ahh there’s a tale
Of lands where gold will flow like ale.
The King can with a touch transmute
The common trash to piles of loot.

(You click on rocks then grind some more
To buy some upgrades at the store.)

The champions apply their skill
To serve the greed of Midas’ will.

A billion trillion zillion coins
Are all that stir this ruler’s loins;
More gold he cries, and builds up walls
Of barracks, temples, guilds and halls.

It multiplies, times ten again
But Midas just sends out his men
To raid the wealth of every city,
Never pauses to feel pity.

The gold flows on, and on and on
Till rivers, lakes and seas are gone,
Replaced with heaps of shining gold;
The fields go bare, the fires go cold.

Yet still the greedy get their way
For men will fight when promised pay.
A War Outpost where once was farms
Now churns out fearsome men-at-arms.

King Midas with his heart of stone
Sends men to Sparta, Troy and Rome.
Bring me their grain, their wood and lead
And all shall turn to gold instead.

Yet though he’s cruel, he’s loved by all:
He holds his people in his thrall.
King Midas orders mighty beasts
To fight on holidays and feasts.

One day, King Midas you will learn
You should not buy their love but earn.
A wise man yet will seal your fall
By clicking on the Uninstall.

Some very elegant puzzles in this one. Still can't find some of the hidden stuff but that brings replay value. It's tomb raider without all the energetic stuff.

Tremendous fun and very hard in places. Slightly ironic though that one of the achievements was spelt incorrectly "Benelovent".

The interface was clunky and not very natural feeling. I would want to play this through steam and log in that way, not give my email address to some outside company. I think that last part may stop me buying the full version. It is way worse than the xbox live version from years ago.

This is my favourite game on Steam and although I am 3k hours in, in POE terms that really is not anything. Honestly. It is that good. The core game is pretty awesome with an amazing flexibility to the skill tree, item setups, crafting, spells, minions and hideout designs. On top of this there are a number of special features pioneered in temporary leagues that now make up interesting little sidequests as you go, like abysses, breaches, essence monsters and master missions. More get added all the time and at this point the game is so rich and packed that I just keep coming back to it.

Did I mention that it is free? There is no "pay to win" to this - you use currency your character farms to buy items and real cash is only used if you want skins or extra storage space. The in-game market setup is brilliant frankly, having played games in which the trading system is woeful and disorganised (mtg online I am looking at you, bro) - in POE you can easily search a sister site POE.Trade for items players have listed and message them to buy. Selling is easy but for this you do need one premium stash tab (not expensive) where you list prices for items you want to sell.

I have a number of high level characters now yet still think nothing of starting over with a character to try out another interesting build. There are plenty of build guides out there and I would strongly recommend using one - partly for the structure it gives your character setup, but also to learn the subtleties of the design better.

Another really amazing feature, arguably the best in the game is the Labyrinth system - you can run a massive gauntlet of traps and monsters to earn power boosts appropriate to your character class, allowing them to specialise - Marauders for example can become Juggernauts, Chieftains or Berserkers. Not only that but labyrinth runs allow you to augment items with "enchantments" which can make a significant boost in themselves. Oh and the labyrinths give loot. Oh yes baby.

All in all, this game has to be played to be believed but I would give one warning - if you stumble in with no target skill in mind you will wander about hacking things with a sword and though that is still fun, by the time you get to level 60 you will realise the folly of this. Spend 5 minutes on the internet browsing various skills. A search for "path of exile cheap clear all builds" should do it. You can go for fancier setups once your hoard of cash in your base has grown.

I almost envy you, who is new to this game. The joy of discovering it is one I will never have again. In its place I have the deep satisfaction of a finely honed and rewarding love affair of a game.

A small epitaph. I would have gone back to this game but as I was trying to spread myself a little, every time I went back skill tree resets had made all my characters either needing total revision or just plain unusable as that class. The game is glorious if you are playing it all the time but after 3000 hours I want to play some of my collection. Maybe one day I will go back - it is disheartening when you have a tavern full of characters that keep resetting though.
