So this game is the first game in a niche series of RPG's with a very rabid fanbase that considers these games some of the best RPG's ever. From the outside I was very skeptical, and it wasn't until I actually played this that I ended up taking my first step into one of my favorite RPG series.

In regards to my thoughts on this game, I will give my simple thoughts first. Starting with correcting some reviews that are not relevant anymore. I think a big problem of the first three Trails games is on release the combat animations were very slow. However, when I played this a Turbo feature was added and I almost almost had it going. This game is incredibly story-heavy, much moreso than several other RPG's. If you are very averse to reading multiple novels worth of text, this series might be a hard sell. However the gameplay is incredibly solid, and immediately captured my personal taste in RPG combat.

To go into more detail, this game is a turn-based RPG featuring a more strategic combat system than most. Character's turns dynamically shift during combat, and you have a Area of Effect Magic, as well as this game's Craft system. The Craft system, despite what the name sounds like, is actually a meter used for a character's personal skills as well as their ultimate attacks on enemies. The combat is a ton of fun and I enjoy it a lot.

But returning to my one point earlier, this game puts a very heavy emphasis on it's writing, with most of the quests even incorporating it to a degree. In universe you play as Estelle and Joshua, up and coming members of the bracer guild who take many odd jobs, as well as resolving more serious conflicts. Because of this there are a plentiful number of quests, some of which are basic monster hunting, but others will take you into unexplored areas and give you some additional lore and writing.

The setting of this game is but a small part in the overall Trails universe of Zemuria, but it is incredibly fleshed out. Many NPC's are given an incredible amount of detail in their every day lives and personalities over the course of your journey, and this is a constant across the series.

However, an elephant in the room I have dodged is this game's pacing. I want to say right away that this game gets more exciting as it goes along with an ending that feels satisfying and meaningful, while making you want more (in a good way.) That said, the game's pacing for most of it is a bit slower than most of its contemporaries. This is done on purpose to put you into the character's shoes and immerse you in the world before things escalate. But I know friends who really did not enjoy the plot coming off the prologue, trust me it gets WAY better.

Now....If you are a fan of newer Trails games like Cold Steel, I do want to buffer this. This is the first Trails games, and later ones, including the sequel do play much better. However, I think you'll still find this game charming, but you might struggle more than someone playing this game as their first Trails.

The music for this game is very well done, capturing the tone very well, and as the scale escalates the music becomes more grand as you progress. Special shoutouts to the regular battle theme, and the final level theme which perfectly illustrate what I mean.

Overall, in my opinion, this game is the best game to start the Trails series with if you can push through the first few chapters and get into the exciting bits. It is very important to fully understanding context and characters that appear all throughout the future titles, and will be harder to play if you played Cold Steel first.

The best thing is, this game is not even close to my favorite game in the series, but on my first play through, this was one of my favorite RPG's in years. It also is sold for relatively cheap on a regular basis, so hope you enjoy it if you pick it up!
