sm64 did do a lot of things better dont get me wrong like comparing sa2s early levels to sm64s early levels sm64s are definitely designed way better for example but sm64 is designed to be a lot more open while sa2 is designed to be a lot more linear like sm64 puts you in an area and tells you theres a lot of stars in said area and sends you off to go find them while sa2 you start somewhere and your told to just reach the end (except for the treasure hunting stages because there weird and dont have one endpoint like the mech or speed stages) as quickly as you can while also obtaining as many points as you can as well and with how sa2 is designed all you need is the stuff that the game gives you you dont need mario movement in sonic if you want mario movement sonic is a terrible place to go in general not just sa2
fair enough the earlier treasure hunting stages do be like that im mainly fine with them since there easy a ranks since there early in the game and i dont really have to spend that much time on them but the later levels can get a bit too big especially mad space and meteor heard
im pretty sure the only speed stage you played was radical highway which like yeah it is the first speed stage youll play if you started with dark story like how you did it is supposed to be really easy and simple just so your able to get a feel of how to actually play the game but imo they did do it in a way where the level is kinda boring the later speed stages are definitely a lot more fun and engaging
the treasure hunt stage was a pain in the ass, and nothing interesting happening at all.
the speed stage was "run in a line with a couple of obstacles and twists" no movement tech, just hold forward and jump a couple of times.
mario 64 did literally everything better. there's movement tech like long jumping, backwards jumping, and triple jumping, and it always feels like you're getting somewhere. puzzles are more fun and engaging, even in the early stages.
the speed stages are kind of the same as in there better when your better at the game but its less extreme as the treasure hunting stages
either way how much fun youll have with sa2 is kinda dependent of how good you are at the video game like me personally i didnt really call it peak until after i got good enough where i could start doing the levels quickly and even then the game still progressively becomes more and more fun for me the more i play it and get better at the game
