First of all the free demo gives quite a lot of gameplay, so there's plenty of opportunity to work out whether the game is for you without having to rush your decision in the two-hour refund window.

I've only had the game 3 weeks and I've already played it more than two other games I loved - Banished and Dawn of Man - which shows just how good it is.

The idea is the game is that you are the only survivor, except for a few monks in a cave somewhere, of a horrible blight that has infected the land, and must survive until a cure can be found. There is a lot of crafting of items (shelter, metalwork, food, pottery) to be done, and all of it takes quite a lot of effort, which will seem like a real grind to some, but to others (like me) it's highly addictive and realistic. There are animals to catch and fight off, and a large map to explore.
The graphics are good, very similar to Medieval Dynasty in appearance, and the top-down perspective works very well for me. There's a third-person option but personally I don't want to look at the back of someone's head all the time, so I haven't tried it.
It's EA but everything works very well - it's an extremely well-crafted game. The only real downside is that, for the moment, you're only getting half the game as the quest finishes halfway through, so you can't eradicate the horrible blight yet, and it keeps on spreading. But what a half game it is! The solo developer is providing enhancements regularly so hopefully the quest will progress fairly soon. The price is currently very cheap for what you get, so I'd definitely recommend giving the demo a try.

It's OK, but definitely not worth the hype. It's a rehash of Banished and Ostriv with an occasional bit of fighting added in.
I know it's Early Access but even by those standards it has a long way to go, with a lot of functions marked 'work in progress'.

It's fun to play for a few hours and it could turn into a good game in time, but there's nothing particularly original in it at the moment.

Looks really good to start with. The combat seems OK to me, it's not trivial but not as hard as in some games, and might be quite fun to get good at. The graphics aren't amazing but they'll do. Music is not great.

Some very tedious mechanics crush the initial feeling pretty quickly, shortly after the refund window has closed. Maybe if you hate yourself enough to persevere it gets good again.
To start with you have to guess (ok, there is a hint from an NPC) that you can do one fairly simple thing in order to save your home, as long as you're quick, or you can try to make lots of money in 5 days, which looks almost impossible. Or just lose your home.
Your character doesn't die and you can't easily revert to earlier saves, Instead, every time your character 'dies' you get miraculously 'rescued' and you often lose your stuff. If you 'die' enough times eventually you get rescued by the right person and the stuff you lost ages ago in a different part of the map reappears by your side.
You can't revert to an earlier save without closing the game, browsing to your save files, deleting the most recent one(s) and restarting the game, which is spectacularly annoying and wastes a few minutes each time (for comparison I was perfectly happy with the Saviour Schnapps mechanic in Kingdom Come Deliverance, which annoyed a lot of people).
Then you get the choice of picking the next main quest, which for me involved joining a holy order. So I walked all the way across the map, only to find that I needed to take some travel rations with me in order to get to the swamp where the temple was, which obviously I didn't have, so I had to walk all the way back again, get the ingredients and make the travel rations, then go back to the swamp. A really tedious walk to the temple then followed, getting killed many times by some dinosaur-like creatures, until eventually I was saved by a random pilgrim and found myself in my desired destination.
Then in order to join the holy order I had to make a potion, which amazingly I had the ingredients for, but didn't have an alchemy kit, so I had to buy one. Then I had to find out how to use an alchemy kit (google said I needed a campfire). Stupidly destroyed my campfire before making the potion then found I couldn't get any more wood in the city so I couldn't make another campfire, so I had to go through the process of deleting saves and restarting. Made the potion and joined the holy order.
Then I was stuck there listening to the most annoying music I've ever heard in a game. It was like a 3-year-old with infinite patience had got hold of a xylophone and wouldn't let go of it.
I needed money in order to progress, and I didn't have any. There seemed to be no way of making much money in the city (and I couldn't stand the music) so I left the city and endlessly dodged the various bandits and dinosaurs in the swamp outside to see if I could make my in-game life worth living again. I didn't succeed, so I started from scratch again so I could try something other than joining the holy order. Walked to the beach again. Realised I'd forgotten to bring the bandage, so walked back, got the bandage, walked back to the beach. You have no idea how satisfying that wasn't. Then I think I got killed by a giant prawn, got rescued by another strange creature and lost some of my items again, Thought about going through the process of deleting my latest save and restarting, but instead had an overwhelming urge to go and watch some paint dry.
My greatest admiration to those who play this for hundreds of hours.

I bought this because I loved the developer's first game, Founders' Fortune, and although it's a very different game and IMO neither as charming nor as addictive, it is similarly well executed. At first glance it's Anno 2070 without the culture wars but there's a much more complicated logistics side to it, and a huge technology tree. Managing and distributing resources could easily become quite tedious but this game seems to get around that well, and the automation of deliveries using roads, trains and cargo gondolas works nicely, with about the right level of player intervention. Other than the occasionally wiggly rail lines it did what I wanted it to do. The user interface is intuitive enough but there's still a bit of a learning curve. It would be good it if was possible to expand stations without having to demolish them first, but that's my only real complaint.
As with any game like this it's probably just a case of working your way up the technology tree and building every kind of building then moving on to another game. There's nothing particularly ground-breaking about it but I think it's good for several hours of gameplay, and it seems fairly priced for what it is.

Somehow this is really good fun! The enemies are quite stupid, the locations (either castles populated with skeletons or caves with goblins) seem a bit repetitive and the graphics are basic, but none of that matters as the overall game is very entertaining and perfectly playable despite being Early Access.
The enemies get more powerful as you level up and it looks like it'll hold my interest for a good few more hours to come.
It's billed as a 'straightforward first-person fantasy action RPG' and that's exactly what it is.
Aesthetically it's very similar to Tavern Master and Shadows Over Silesia, and it has a similar passion-project feel to those games, which is a very good thing.
The game has a lot of potential but I'd say it's already very good as it is.

Undeniably a masterpiece as a work of art, but as a game it's definitely not for everyone. I thought it was going to be great from the beginning but it quickly got boring, just walking about and sticking my character's (if you can call it that - it didn't have any character) hand into various holes and seeing what happened. I suggest spending a few minutes watching a walkthrough on youtube to find out whether it's your thing. It certainly wasn't mine.

This is a great game! It does a lot of things really well.

Simple but very effective graphics. Surprisingly atmospheric.
Great music, though it blends so well into the game that I hardly notice it.
Varied gameplay: sneaking, solving puzzles, combat, running from enemies.
Very good voice acting.
Combat is about right for the game: not complicated but it's not just spamming a button. It takes a bit of practice to get the timing right. There's an arena mode where you can just practise combat, which is a nice feature.
Some puzzles are really challenging. I love the encrypted letters!
Good story. It's a linear game so you have to do everything in order and it's all-action - there's no extended walking/riding around soaking up the atmosphere, and no need to make the characters eat or sleep.
The controls seem AWFUL at first but you get used to them quite quickly. I had a bit of trouble running on stairs but otherwise they're fine.
It's quite funny in places and there are some nice subtle references to another great game set in 15th Century Bohemia. I was pleased to pick up a Lords of Leipa shield!

I wasn't sure that a fusion of RPG and builder sim would work, but it does.
Definitely takes the Banished concept to another level.
Good, if not world-leading, graphics, with beautiful scenery.
Very enjoyable gameplay.
Reasonably good quests, but they're really only there to teach you the mechanics.
Weak voice-acting, but most lines are not dubbed so that doesn't matter anyway.
Music is OK.
Quite relaxing, but challenging enough to be interesting.
So far this is the only game that's kept me off Kingdom Come: Deliverance for any appreciable length of time.

It was like watching a very beautifully made film about some characters I didn't like, and occasionally pressing left-shift while I listened to them talk.
Between the numerous long cutscenes the only significant bits of interaction it let me do were to shoot some wolves, hunt some deer, take part in a gunfight, walk along a train, and repair a wagon simply by pressing E when it told me to, none of which was exciting in the slightest. I was looking for something like Kingdom Come: Deliverance and didn't find it here.

WTF? Was this really written by the same people who produced the incredible base game and the other DLC? I've only played the Johanka quests so far and it's been like watching a beloved friend succumb to a horrible illness. Or the first Star Wars prequel. The dialogue is excessively long and puerile. I really don't want to spend my time telling Johanka what a wonderful speech she gave and how she must really have been called on by the Virgin Mary, and I really doubt that anyone who enjoyed the main game would want to do so either. The final straw was having to send heroic Henry on a dreadful pilgrimage on foot from Sasau to Uzhitz, pathetically self-flagellating at every shrine on the way. I honestly felt sorry for the actor for having to recite such drivel and I only made it as far as the outskirts of Sasau before giving up and riding to Skalitz to look for some trouble.
Only play this if your addiction to KCD is having a negative impact on your life and you want to break it.

I forced myself to try this again after 6 months just to complete the achievements, and the script for the Johanka quests was just as dire and far-removed from the sparkling script of the base game as I remember. When he's not sucking up to the annoying Johanka, Henry briefly talks to a boulder.
There are some very good ideas in some of the quests but the execution is poor and I was just glad when it was all over.

The Theresa quests were if anything even more dull, though the script is better and it is interesting to see a bit more of Skalitz (unfortunately not Rovna) before it was wrecked. There was one genuinely good bit, after the Cumans have invaded. Sadly you have to go through a lot of tedious walking around from one place to another and back again to get that far, and it's very nearly worth the pain.

The dog companion is very well done, and you don't have to do any of the ghastly quests in order to get that, so if you want some help with hunting it might be worth buying this if it's on offer.
