Battlefield 2042 is not a Battlefield game. It is a hollowed out shell of what might have been a Battlefield game if the people making the decisions actually cared about what they were making, and the people that buy their product. At the end of the day, that is exactly what it is. A "Product".

They have made all their design decisions based on what kind of micro-transactions they might be able to sell to people. Knife kills: we can sell 3rd person take downs. Player cards? We can sell unique visuals for that. Specialists? Easy money from cosmetics. They have looked at other games on the market and tried to copy the trends, instead of staying true to what makes people love Battlefield. The issue is that they only copied the micro-transactions and ignored that they were part of a FREE TO PLAY monetisation scheme. If something is free, I don't have a problem with you having in game purchases and 3rd person take-downs so that the company can make money, but when they destroy the actual game that people wanted just to they can make a few extra bucks on a game people have already paid FULL AAA PRICE for, it is disgusting.

If you can put aside all of that (and that is a big thing to ask of most people), and you just want to play the game and have fun shooting things, you might get some enjoyment from the game, if it works. The game is not ready for launch. 128 players and huge maps is what we were told. What we received are desolate spaces with objectives placed randomly around them. You spend more time trying to move from one point to another than you do actually defending or attacking anything. With most people just wanting some action, you end up with 90% of the players on the server just fighting over a single sector, with the rest of the map being ignored.

The beta had some amazing gunplay with real potential in it, but that got nerfed so that shooting things further than 25m away is now a dice (cough) throw to see who has better luck with their random bullets that don't go where you aim. There are 22 guns for a full release game, and only about 6 of them are actually of any reasonable use. Levelution used to be a skyscraper coming down with dust and rubble, now you have a small radio-tower falling over unnoticed. There are no infantry only maps or modes for 2042, so half your deaths will be to the overpowered hovercraft, the rest to a mixture of helicopters, tanks, the PP, and once in a while some daring soldier will get lucky and kill you with an AR.

I would not advise you to spend money on this game as it is. Wait 6 months, maybe at that point things will be in a better state and you can pick it up at 60% off special prices.

Dice is dead, this is an EA title to the core. Battlefield is now just an IP that EA can cash in on.
