An Acceptable Level of Suffering
In case you were wondering, The Chinese Room (the name of the devs) is a though experiment regarding computers, wherein a computer running a program for simulating human speech accurately enough to pass the Turing test cannot be said to have a mind or consciousness of it's own; it is merely simulating the understanding of human speech.
As for the game? It's brutally linear, has insultingly easy puzzles, isn't particularly scary, has a predictable plot, and is rather on the short side as well.
4/10, don't even bother getting it on sale.

Welcome to the family, son.
A stunning return to form for the series that literally changes your perspective on the game. It took me a while to work up the nerve to actually play this game, as it seems to me to be very PT inspired. This isn't quite the case as the game gives you a shotgun, but there are definitely moments of tension (and the occasional cheap jumpscare). At the same time the game doesn't forget it's B-movie roots and has some silly things like a chainsaw lightsaber duel in it.

A little rough, don't you think?
A mostly nostalgia free comparison to the game's forebear
Note that while I consider the original release to be superior this is still an excellent game. It does some things better than the original and does some things worse.

Good Changes
+Melee combat has been improved, with the new parry system and taking down downed enemies or enemies from behind flowing well into each other until your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ knife breaks. Also: chainsaw parrying. It’s cool *every time*
+Separate Ways has been completely revamped and doesn’t suck eggs now
+Luis' character and storyline has been greatly improved
+The knife fight with Krauser has been turned from cutscene to gameplay and is fantastic
+Perhaps controversially, I prefer the new merchant
+While they are paid DLC, the new character outfits are great
+Cat ears

Mixed
~Extra emphasis has been placed on the dog, who is very good, but you cannot pet the dog
~Graphics have been improved substantially, although 2005 Leon is still much prettier than 2023 Leon and sometimes environments can be visually "busy"

Bad Changes
-Removing the laser pointer from most weapons is the worst change. Now your shots can often rely on crosshaiRNG to hit, rather than skill. It’s hard to overstate how poor of a design decision this is. Standing still, aiming, and “charging” a critical hit worked well in the RE2make, because you were dealing with small numbers of slow moving weak enemies. This game has as it’s trademark opener an entire village attacking you; you have to be able to make large numbers of quick precision shots to the head/legs & move to follow up with a melee attack. *Nobody* is standing still for this, especially since you removed the tank controls! The laser also used to end in a small bead when aimed at shootable items and enemies.
-There is no more music in safe rooms, it only plays when interacting with the merchant or using the typewriter. A big misstep when the original has such legendary save room music
-The hiker getting executed in the beginning of the game is a gratuitous non sequitur and has no bearing on the plot
-Leon grunts every time you aim your weapon
-The voice acting ranges from passable to abysmal (Ada)
-The shooting range is much more difficult (partly due to the laser->crosshair change, natch) for much less valuable gacha rewards
-This might be personal preference, but the Bolt Thrower is extremely lame, especially compared to the Mine Thrower
-The helicopter pilot now has some inbred southern accent instead of a badass Brooklyn accent
-The removal of the Broken Butterfly's reload animation is likely to accommodate needing to move and reload at the same time, but it does still sting a little

My name is Moira Burton.
I’ll admit I have a soft spot for this game. It’s perfect if you have a friend who is a scaredy-cat, as you can be in front as Claire/Barry, while the friend can stay behind and point out items and act as support as Moira/Natalia. The gameplay and story mesh well together as you play through the villain of the week’s sadistic traps and zombie horror as Claire/Moira, then play as Barry/Natalia 6 months later trying to figure out what happened. The only bad thing is there’s a really dumb thing you have to do to get the “true” ending, which you definitely won’t figure out on your first playthrough.

Me and my sweet ass are on the way!
No, I didn’t make that line up. And despite how stupid that line was and some of the supporting characters are, this game does have an interesting plot, with a couple of juicy twists to chew on. Considering that of all things this started as a 3DS exclusive, it’s well put together. Some of the enemies are a little spongy but the game makes use of its ocean liner setting very well. The scanning mechanic is boring. I can’t think of any other strong negatives or positives for it.

[white noise]
This is real bottom of the barrel level stuff. The best I have to say about it is there’s a button where you hurl yourself backwards and can then roll around on the ground which is hilarious.

Complete. Global. Saturation.
A child, playing with his father’s tools not knowing how they work, and sacrificing too much on the altar of forced co-op. The elegant attache case system and the iconic merchant are both gone. The treatment of women has gone from quaint “ballistics” references to fanservice close-up camera shots on Sheva’s ass and breasts. Chris has cartoonish proportions, and as for the story most people only remember the infamous boulder punching QTE. Through the muck in the moment to moment gameplay you can see glimpses of the greatness that Resident Evil 4 was, but this was a firm step backward.

♥♥♥♥♥ can’t even swim.
Let's get one thing out of the way first: that scene with the drain deimos. You know the one. It wasn't even a death scene! Despite an obvious note nearby telling how they worked, some creep(s) at Capcom decided they wanted their weird fetish in the game. ♥♥♥♥ off.
Besides that, the biggest mistake this game makes is moving Jill’s “stars” line into a throwaway line while being chased. It’s the most iconic line in the series outside of Resident Evil 4 or the original RE, and Capcom did it dirty.
The good things this game does are letting you see and maneuver around enemies (static camera angles and tank controls are bad, take off your nostalgia glasses), making the dodge mechanic useful, an excellent story, removing that stupid decision system, good remixing of the source music, and, without wishing to spoil, making the final fight with Nemesis outrageously cool.
There was a price, however. Nemmy’s other appearances besides in the city go from being scripted sequences (with honest to goodness QTEs) to standalone boss fights. He isn’t chasing you much, gameplay wise. There have also been a lot of cuts; while I thought the city was nice, it’s smaller than the original and sacrifices some alleyways. The park, the clock tower, the gravedigger, the mercenaries, and probably some more things I’m forgetting have all been axed. There’s a new small sewer area, if you like those (?).
On its own, this remake is a good game, but don’t expect too much reverence for the source material.

This place will eat you alive if you aren't careful
WE DO IT! Resident Evil 2 was the best of the classic Resident Evil games, and this remake has broken it free from the shackles of tank controls, static camera angles, and ink ribbons, leaning more towards Resident Evil 4 gameplay. The dialogue between Leon and Claire is somewhat awkward and stilted, though it’s hardly a downgrade from the 1998 localization.
