Early Access Review
TL;DR: Can be an unforgiving, but oh-so-satisfying zombie survival experience.

This is it. This is THE zombie survival game I've been looking for.

You'd be forgiven for thinking that this type of game is quite over-saturated in the game market. Open world, survival, crafting, base building, zombies. All the usual suspects.

But by God Project Zomboid just works. You create a character, spawn in, maybe gather some starter loot, and then do whatever the Hell you like. A word of warning, as you'll quickly learn: Death is an absolute certainty. In classic Romero zombie fashion, all it takes is one bite to seal your fate. Thankfully, there's a wide range of sandbox settings to tweak if you don't feel like jumping in at the Dark Souls end of the pool. Hell, you can remove zombies altogether if you like.

So what is PZ about, exactly? With the size of the world and depth of multiple in-game systems, it can be about whatever you want it to be. There's no "winning" the game, no end-credits scene. It's all about lasting as long as you can.

Touching on those in-depth systems, there are plenty. Right at the start screen, you're greeting with character customisation. You can select your occupation, and are given points to spend on traits. Select too many positive traits, and you'll have to sink your teeth into some negative ones to balance out the cost. Once you're physically in the game, there's farming, first aid, car mechanics, construction, foraging, skills to level up, and other things far too numerous to list here. And don't even get me started on Steam Workshop availability.

The combat is fairly primative, and a little janky at times. But it's something you'll quickly get used to, and find immense satisfaction in. There's nothing quite like marvelling at a horde of corpses that now lie at your feet, narrowly escaping death with but a scratch. At least, until the "queasy" status effect shows up the next day...

So yeah, Fantastic zombie game, unlike the many others floating around the market. If this sounds like your kind of thing and you have the funds to spare, give it a whirl.
