Vanilla, DLC, or modded, this game is fun for those it aims for. While the graphics may make it seem simple, the gameplay straightforward, it knows how to challenge you if it's what you want- And how to be gentle if you'd rather. From the Storyteller system, which can make things as easy or hard, predictable or chaotic, as you want, to the very act of building, the game knows how to build itself for those who want a good colony builder experience.

While still a little rough, sporting bugs- The gameplay is solid, the opportunities interesting, and the concepts can grab you very easily. Not a game for everyone, perhaps, but for those of us that have always wanted to be an A.I. overlord, and feel like we have both meaningful choices to make and yet the room to be allowed to explore however we wish all in one package, it's a good game. And this is coming from someone who's not usually a '4x strategy' gamer!

Before I get into why I recommend this game, a warning: This isn't the kind of game that's for everyone. It can be tedious, it can be mind numbing both from over and under use of the brain depending on what you're doing, and it can be time consuming above all else. This game will take time, and forethought. Resource management, setting up automated supply chains, and scouting out new areas while trying to survive possibly horrendously powerful aliens can lead to an experience that can either be highly frustrating, or, in my personal case, highly rewarding.
I've spent upwards of 200 hours in this game at the time of writing, some of which was 'vanilla', some with so many mods your head would spin. Some solo, some multiplayer with friends and randoms alike. I've experienced a lot of what this game has offered, and yet, also very little. I've yet to actually 'beat' it even once, and yet, I find myself not at all unhappy with this. I find the game fun enough to keep coming back and trying to figure out how to bring it to a proper conclusion. Making conveyer and train systems to bring ore and oil from distant reaches back to 'spawn' where the main base was. Sometimes deigning to make a new base somewhere else. Learning what works and what doesn't. This is a game that will make you think seriously about every step, and there will be times you need to completely destroy your base and start it back from scratch just to get the logistic lines sorted how they'll be needed... But if you're like me, every step will be enjoyable, in it's own ways.

If you're not willing to shell out money, the game can feel a bit of a grind at times as you try and get that next item you're wanting- Whether that be Warframe, gear, weapons, a new piece for your ship, or so on. However, while it can be, it's usually still rather enjoyable as long as you know the systems and how to use them, and once you've farmed up certain items/Warframes, the grind can be lessened by them. Really, however, this game only truly shines, at least for me, when I'm playing it with my friends, whether that be running around one of the currently only a few open world segments, or running through a few missions trying to get those last few supplies for the latest project. Additionally, even without friends I find myself sucked into the lore of the world/universe itself, and have fallen in love with the story and how it is portrayed.

While this game may not be for everyone, and believe me as someone who has played countless hours in this game, both in it's 'Alpha' stages, and post-launch, it certainly isn't something for everyone, it is a solidly good game. It has a good story that makes one want to explore and see the different planets, biomes, and villages/dungeons that are included in the game. It also comes with many aspects, and a great multiplayer side to things. Fighting isn't your thing? You don't necessarily have to, you can go off and be a farmer. Want a little more company? You can easily start up a colony of your own, and even get rewarded with not only cash to use to get the items to expand your colony, but you can also gain great weapons and gear from your colonists, and even complete quests for them that could end with the colonist wanting to join your ship's crew. If story isn't your thing, while I personally deeply enjoy the story, you don't HAVE to play it, as with this open world game, you can just explore the stars all you like after completing just a few introductory quests to get your ship repaired, and after that, you pick your adventure. The game can have a little bit of a learning curve for those who want to get into it, and the controls are something to get used to if you don't already know them, but it's certainly not lacking in making up for those facts with the S.A.I.L. unit, an A.I. on your ship essentially, giving advice where it feels necessary. To top it off, if you ever get bored of the main game, there is a wide selection of mods that are constantly being made and updated for this game, so that you can always try something new if you ever feel the need to.

In basics: The game is well made, but can strike those not used to the mechanics a little off, but quickly becomes rewarding if you can push through and find what about the game you'd enjoy, with a community that both love the game themselves, and love to put out content to make it better. Definitely worth the price, and even more so if you have friends to play the game with.
