I'm a newcomer to OMD and I'm pretty disappointed in this one. I have only played Unchained before this one, and I'm not sure why it was so poorly received in comparison (I'm assuming the F2P format was one of the biggest if not the main reason the game wasn't liked).

There's a lot of depth that's gone with the removal of different characters that have different attacks and ablities. Now picking a hero is just like picking a skin, because their movement gimmick doesn't really matter all that much. It makes me wish all characters had the same double jump or glide, and I wouldn't really miss either one of those if they were removed from the game anyway.
I don't really understand the appeal of playing a character-based tower defense if the characters are irrelevant, and so are a lot of weapons. It's hard to tell the reach of a melee weapon and they're pretty subpar compared to the ranged ones, considering you have to put yourself in danger to use them and this game features flyers that will required ranged weapons anyway. Again, I ended up picking either the blunderbuss or the arcane staff because I like their aesthetics more than their purpose, which makes me wonder why I should even be interested in weapons in the first place.

The biggest downgrade I see from Unchained are the maps, which are both extremely small and very annoying. There's only one map in which you can make an actual death box that isn't two meters away from your rift, and it will still cost a lot of expensive barriers to shape it this way. How about a map with three entrances, one of them directly in front of the rift? Enjoy figuring out how to kill reinforced ogres that will pass only one wall trap emplacement. How about a symetrical map in which mountain trolls come out of both entrances, and there is no possible way to reconcile both paths so you can atleast try and manage them. Let's add flyers for good measure, because most of the game isn't already spent on taking down walking HP bags by hand already, apparently.
Even on the maps that don't feel claustrophobic, a lot of the space is wasted anyway. Colisseum also has a frustrating layout, but on top of that half of the map isn't even used. You end up dumping all of your money as close as possible to your rift, because there are four entrances to cover and three paths to watch out for. Make sure that the bombers come in from the doors where every player will maze, so that they have to double-barricade a path to pretend they're trying to approach the game strategically.

The only maps I did like were the war games, though admittedly very easy in comparison, I atleast had fun playing them. But unless I missed something, they were only a campaign thing, and you can't play them in endless? I know they are featured in the challenges, but I don't want to play a map that introduced the most hilarious traps I've seen without the hilarious traps.

There's also some random things I've noticed, like the low-res quality of some artwork, the ending of the main campaign that's bugged (you can't watch the scene unless you're on the post-game menu, you will only hear the characters talk and see blurry subtitles. great, the campaign plot wasn't underwhelming already), but at that point I really don't care about that kind of small stuff. I wish these were the only thing I could complain about.

Everything feels scaled down and a lot less interesting, which kinda makes me wish I could have just bought Unchained at full price and still play that game, even alone, today. There's nothing this game did better than the previous one for me, so I guess it's a return to sources for the fans or something?
