Look, I know the game is buggy, and I know that red did some twofaced ♥♥♥♥ with reviews, but the simple fact of the matter is that I love this game despite it all. The bugs got bad at times, but it was still worth my time. If you have decent tolerance for bugs and saving a lot, this game is worth it.

I haven't finished the game, but as a fan of Berserk this is a fun and easily consumable way of learning the story (No replacement for the manga but still). The only real complaint I have is that it's difficulties are too vast. The difference between hard and berserk is cackling while you slice away at enemies without a care, and dying in three seconds to randos. Wish I had more of an in between.

TLDR: IF you like berserk, brutal spectacle, or the Dynasty Warriors franchise, this is a great game.

Its Reach. What more can be said? If you didn't play it why are you here?

A legend of map design and player choice. This was the first game I ever felt compelled to challenge myself back in 2012. Since then I have beaten the game on the hardest difficulty without ever being seen, without killing anyone, and without using powers (#humblebrag), not because the game told me I should, but because it gives you the freedom to play the way you see fit. I completed that death march because I WANTED to.

I can't say anything about this game's design that hasn't already been said - but to me this game represents what games should aspire to be. Every inch, every design choice revolves around giving the player as many tools and paths as they could ever want to express themselves with enough limitations to still be challenging. This is the ultimate game where I felt I was able to express how I wanted to play.

Not much for these crafting/managing games, but I've found that I can start up the game and an hour has just disappeared. Engaging crafting that makes it easy for you to set goals for yourself, a frankly ludicrous amount of stuff you can do, and comically interesting plot makes this game a worthy purchase for its price.

TL:DR version:

This game deserves your money and you deserve to play it. The story got a little bit TOO anime for me (yes even for a DMC game) and the game time was somewhat short, but the amount of love, polish, and care that went into this game is frankly unbelievable. The campaign was an absolute blast, the mechanics are fun and engaging, every character is unique and interesting, feeling significantly different from each other.

If you're a fan of DMC, this game was hand crafted for you. Buy it.

Long version:
This is the first game review I've ever written, but I felt compelled to share my thoughts:

I was haughtily told that this game would exceed my expectations, something I cringed at with the recent failed promises from companies I trusted in Fallout 76, Battle for Azeroth, etc.

But I am absolutely thrilled to tell you that my expectations have been exceeded tenfold.

The passion that went into every aspect of this game is clear to see, and in this age of false promises and disappointments I think it is ABSOLUTELY IMPERATIVE to highlight this blinding beacon of hope in the dark. THIS is how you make a video game.

I do have some nitpicks which prevent this game from getting a perfect score in my eyes, but like I said above: This game absolutely deserves your money, and you deserve to play it.

WHATS GOOD: (Minor spoilers of mechanics ahead)

People have complained about the game's run-time but honestly I felt like it didn't bother me too much, the length felt fine to me, and with so much packed into every minute of it, I think it's fine. I would rather have a 10-20 hour game of diverse, well-made content than a 30-60 hour one of the same stuff you've already done.

The characters feel razor-tight in their design, and they incredibly distinct from one another:

Dante has kept his moveset with some awesome additions in terms of his extra devil arms - I've always thought with the exception of cerberus that a lot of the weapons were clumsy or super specific, but every weapon in this arsenal feels like they can be used in so many situations, are stylish and slick, and most importantly feel great to use. He also gets an interesting addition to his primary sword that changes it's functionality mechanically, but it does mess with his moveset which rubbed me the wrong way at first - but the post-game lets you pick and choose if you'd rather have the old DMC4/3 moveset or this new mechanic.

Nero was fun in DMC 4, I enjoyed his grapples and the spectacle of his moveset but I always leaned toward Dante due to just how mobile he was and how much he could do thanks to his stance dancing. This game has solved that in the most ideal way for me personally. He's gotten several new moves that close gaps and blend seamlessly into each other without compromising his original moveset. I was worried about the mechanical arm thing, and kind of hated it at first, but it grew on me slowly with just how goofy some of them were and how usable they are. (SPOILER INCOMING) I kind of hated that they came at the cost of one of his major mechanics, but you get an equivalent in the post-game IN ADDITION to everything else. Nero is my new main character for this game as a result.

V was a character I was extremely concerned about. I hate managing multiple characters and I hate being glass cannons, but V was surprisingly fun to play. Controlling and managing your three summons is interesting, it's not my cup of tea but I can see people getting a lot of enjoyment out of him. He is my least favorite out of the main three, but he was usable and even fun at times. There was a particular moment that sold the character for me, and I will hint at it: Once you get your triple S, get to a place where you wont be attacked, lock on to an enemy, taunt, and continue to attack but don't move. Trust me.

The level design is also inspired.

The RE7 engine lends itself well, and the team took inspiration from the good points of the DMC remake in terms of its look. The world feels lived in, like things existed and happened before you came along in it, which is something I can't say about the previous games. On top of that I was stunned to see the amount of bosses, I was not expecting that. There's practically 1 per level, and I can't really say any of them weren't memorable. Some of them were easier than others, but they all felt FUN.

WHATS NOT GREAT: (Minor story/mechanical spoilers ahead)

The Story was promising but felt like it fell off toward the end. I'm all for goofiness and dumb nonsense (This is DMC after all) but not when it tries to take itself seriously while doing it.

The ending isn't great. I can't talk about it too much without major spoilers but it feels more like the ending of DBZ than DMC. As well, a lot of things felt contrived and the plot twist is so incredibly obvious that anybody could see it coming. It is sprinkled with a lot of little interesting plot mysteries and things going on, but they didn't really go anywhere interesting.

Another problem that I had is how the game locks you into certain mechanics such as the aforementioned Dante thing above. As a primarily Sword Master user, being locked out of the fighting style I've gotten used to felt kind of ♥♥♥♥♥♥. As well, V is fun on occasion and I can see people getting a lot of enjoyment out of him, but being forced into playing him, going from obliterating on Dante and wrecking shop on Nero, then to getting stomped on as V doesn't feel great. It's a personal thing, but it's there and worth mentioning.
