It's pretty much a modernized Left 4 Dead but with more gun classes, skill class system, infected etc. It's not running physics-focused engine so you can't push zombies with medkits similar to Left 4 Dead but that zombie crowd size sure is something

There's IAP stuff in contrast to L4D but if you play on hard difficulty, you rack up XPs pretty fast so the choice is on you. No workshop support though :/

The game

Cyber Sleuth

Play the game in the perspective of a hero. Don't want to spoil much but basically your soul is separated from your body because of neuralink-like thing and you want to go back and got involved with various stuff in the process. Gameplay reminds me of Digimon World 2 on PS1 but miles better. Collecting Digimon is much more forgiving than Pokemon as you can Digivolve and De-Digivolve to collect them all.

Can be grindy but they laid out all the stuff for you to lessen the burden (hint: use all Tactician USBs you got). Tamer and bosses can be annoying since they know how to counter abnormal status like sleep etc so you need some tactic against them. Haven't tried Online Colosseum as I'm getting FE Fates network battle (modder infested) but idk, never tried it. Localization seems okay, maybe there are some translatoin error but hardly noticeable. Story is pretty good with its plot twist.

Hacker's Memories

Play the game in the perspective of complete bystander. You don't know anything but you do know what happen eventually. The second game is quite tough, not to mention you don't get bunch of useful equipments even though you've done multiple quest to get those items. Tactician USBs are hard to find so grinding is tedious, so get a Supervisor (hint: not an item) and boost those Tactician USBs.

Localization took a downhill here from spelling mistakes, missing punctuation as well as forgetting who is your Cyber Sleuth counterpart. Maybe one day I could take a look and fix it. So far Export/Free Gate is kinda broken as it takes you back to lv. 1 in Under Kowloon but works normally in regular Kowloon. Still, the story is pretty great, dare to say it's better than the main one though it has less episodes

The port

I'd say this is an actual port of the Vita game, as in compiling the game source as x86 executable seeing some textures are a bit blurry and how well the game runs on integrated graphics with OpenGL renderer. It's 5GB for 2 games so no complains, not to mention this game runs flawlessly on Vega 8 2500U on battery. No kidding, this game is easy on igp that my Vega 8 2500U sits at 400MHz shader clock as well as 400MHz memory clock. Not sure how well this is on previous intel IGP, but I can assure those who have GPD Win 3 and AYA Neo would be able to run this game easily, though AMD users need to aware that AMD OpenGL driver sucks so you'll probably need Linux if the game struggles

Quirks

The game might start as 720p windowed on first time launch. You need to start a new game either one and before the game starts, you'll be presented the settings. It sure is strange but at least the next time you can change it easily. Under Steam Proton, you need to disable Steam Input so that gamepad is usable. Should be no problem under Windows though. For some reason my overlay is gone but achievement are still being tracked

Some Linux tricks

For AMD users, given this is OpenGL, running the game under Linux would be worthy although even in Windows it seems pretty good. Props to the porting team for splendid OpenGL performance. For advanced users, you can run this game with zink for that Vulkan goodness with MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=zink. be sure to grab zink-wip though as mesa hasn't received the latest zink commits. For some reason DXVK_HUD is not present so use GALLIUM_HUD instead

FInal Thoughts

Is the game worth it? If you're skeptical, wait for sale. To me it's worth it for turn-based single player game. Combined with its low resource and performant on igp, I'd say this game is Steam Deck must-have. This is a pretty underrated game from PSVita. I'm glad it's ported to multiplatform as well as PC. Replayability is great though I'm going to take a rest after grinding 200 hours to complete the entire game. I'm still sad with both ending

game's good but I really need harvester and tractor

After playing for more hours, I'm going to elaborate what I said above

In regards of crops

Plus points

+ Lots of plant varieties and crop leveling system
+ Massive space, really massive that even dedicating to half of the land for grass and wheats, you have another extra space to plant more

Minus points

- Crop leveling system does get tedious. Single harvest crops can make it bearable but multi level crop is another story. Found out that multi harvest crops does not level up after its first harvest no matter how much Fancy fertilizer you dump. So just turn those higher level produce to seeds and plant more, right? Right?

- Coupled with low starting (100) and max stamina (150), it gets much worse. Sure you could take a nap and restore 10 Stamina for each hour slept, but you are racing against time afterwards. Shipment is at 6pm as per Harvest moon/Story of Season standard. Keep dreaming on filling the entire farm since you just collapsed managing a quarter of the land with fertilizing and watering

- Stamina is really low, why not put a gauge or visual indicator like older games? In older games you can see the sign of exhaustion by pale face and distorted BGM but in this game I have to scroll the menu just to ensure I'm not collapsed

- Well, there's food and drugs. You can, but a decent stamina restoring meal cost too much even if you make by yourself. Clinic only permits you to buy one type of medicines each, so extreme farming and mining is hard unless you're in season of Stamina-regenerating produce

- Harvest Sprites? they're there but to unlock them is tedious where you need to have lv. 5 hearts on 3 persons.

- What about upgraded tools? In the past, the point of upgraded tool is to save time and energy (correct me if I'm wrong, my last Harvest moon are on GBA and PS2). You do save time, but not energy. I was thinking that using upgraded action (e.g. 3x watering) spends less energy than a single action (e.g. 1x watering)

- I didn't mention that store only expanded seed variety in SECOND year. Dream on to fill in quest or planting a crop that is fast and profitable. I haven't seen Basket too like in previous game, which is a shame since you can sort stuff you want to sell very fast, not to mention large space to compensate small backpack

- The seed description is vague. You know the time to harvest, but not time to regrow for multi harvest crop. Without prior knowledge you might not even be able to harvest second or third batches. I had to take the risk and stop planting in 20th days forward for unknown plants

- Whoever wrote the seed description, better wrote wheat and grass are all season instead of forced unfunny jokes in the dialogues. I didn't even know wheat are all season until I saw it myself that it didn't even wilt in winter. There's no game manual like in those good old days so why not just write it right there? I can't imagine the pain playing this game at launch

Rant over. Enough talk for now, will continue later

I got frustrated after collapsed due to exhaustion and lost my newly acquired crop after 3 hours of playing. Now I have to talk around townspeople again to increase hearts and whatnot. The autosave doesn't do justice in case of collapse which I think people would rather to restart in the day of collapse than continue next day especially when you are chasing the crop deadline.

Going to grind again. Sheesh. Maybe I'll expand this review with gameplay, performance etc but for a 700MB+ game, this game shouldn't have problems in Intel Graphics after toning down some effects (I play on Radeon Vega 8 Mobile 1080p 30-60 fps btw, dips caused by inconsistent cpu and gpu clocks)

I'd recommend it if there's no elitist shotgun rankers that keeps quitting the game because of getting downed. really bad experience for bone/skull rankers. game still dope though

A simulation, if not the reality of how scary big data can be

I have fears on big data ever since the idea was brought to computing community and predicted that it would grow worse. Then, comes IoT, which, if you have knowledge on building one yourself, is really beneficial (go build home automation yourself and never pass it through public domain) but I always wonder why industries insist on bringing it towards end user while it already has a stable place in industry. then comes industry 4.0 which only bring benefits to manufacturers and extremely little benefit to consumer. not a hater of 5G, but how fast can it transceive information within the mesh is worrying, especially if a huge mesh of IoE (internet of everything, yes IoT is outdated now) is constantly utilizing them to send God knows what are they sending

and that little benefit actually would complete Orwell. the system shown by Orwell is pretty much outdated, if not, a decade at least. have industry 4.0 is included in this game, there would be a huge amount of data and incriminating anyone can be done with just intro video of Orwell

anyway, be careful on the net. remember, you are not a valuable target, period

Signing off

I've used to play a pirated version of this as it was too expensive. for a 2009 game, it still holds up well for story driven game though you need some patches and fixes to make it work better on windows 10. no performance issue so far after the patches. might rerun prototype 2 as well and update the review
