One of the best games ever for me. It captures the tragedy, risk, and beauty of space faring in a clean, hard as nails and straightforward spaceship management sim. It's a beautiful little game that evokes so much atmosphere through simple visuals and a beautiful soundtrack. Sure, it could be a bit more forgivingly balanced, a little less heavy with cruel RNG. I've played for over 30 hours and not beat it on easy (this run is close though!!) But honestly, i dont mind that it;s so brutal. I keep coming back. I wouldnt want every game to be like this, but it works for this one. Space is mercilessly apathetic. To reflect that, we deserve a sci fi game that feels disempowering and fraught.

One of the all time great RPGs. The shooting wasn't great then, and has only worsened by age. It's a bit janky in general, But it is one of the greatest contributions of video games to imaginative fiction. And though later sequels became slicker at shooting, they were also streamlined. Mass Effect is the inbetween step of old school RPG glory into newer, consolized action RP's that dominate the scene today. a great roll playing game, great writing, and atmosphere and exploration.
