Dungeons perfected

Dungeons 4 feels like a raw improvement over the previous title, Dungeons 3. While this installment did indeed take a slight turn towards mobile graphics, do not let that fool you: Dungerons 4 sports a solid gameplay and can provide a challenging experience, especially in the second half of the campaign.

While only a few new creatures and dungeons rooms have been introduced, what really stands out is that many of the pre-existing creatures and rooms have been improved. For example, undead in Dungeons 3 did not really justify their high research and production cost. In Dungeons 4, a full undead army is viable and strong due to minions, tanky frontline and combat healing. Faction levels (horde, demons, undead and dungeon) have been also re-addressed, with factions having now 10 levels and each level unlocking a new research tier. This makes leveling a faction more meaningful than what we had in Dungeons 3 (click button, get a little more damage and health). Titans are also gone, which is nice since they trivialized builiding a strong and functional army. In Dungeons 4 players also gain access to potions from the potions room - courtesy of War for the Overworld - which nicely complement spells. The UI for spellcasting was also improved.

The writing of Dungeons 4 maintains the same style of Dungeons 3, with puns at every line of dialogue, consistent fourth wall breaks and a bit of self-deprecating humor from the developers. It's a very clear choice and it works. The story is, just like the previous title, a bit cliché and over the top but again, Dungeons 4 is not a game you play for the story, and it's not a game that tries to be what it's not.

There are a few things of Dungeons 4 that I wish they were done differently. While the horde creatures can "evolve" with the champion research, this does not happen for the demon and undead creatures. I would love to see the champion succubus or the champion vampire. I was also sad to see the library room go. A few more traps would have been nice. Lastly, there are "good beings" in the game, but what about evil beings?

In summary, Dungeons 4: very recommended if you like dungeon keeper games and are not put off by the cutesy style of graphics.
