Total war hasn't always been a favorite series of mine, the older games while very fun get bogged down in all the minutiae in my opinion, but alot of people play it for that exact reason, I can't honestly suggest Total Warhammer for that type of person, alot of the depth has been taken out of the game to allow for a VAST variety of factions that all play uniquely and have their own rosters and abilities.

In my opinion, this variety more than makes up for a shallower overworld and simpler diplomacy interactions. The real meat of this game is its combat, sending armies of ratmen with machineguns and man portable mortars charging into combat with Egyptian mummies and skeletons with giant walking and fighting statues while spells fly and annihilate entire regiments. You can have an army of boar riding orcs riding down Evil Vikings who worship dark gods and ride warmammoths.

I recommend this game heartily, but if you want the best experience you really do need to buy total warhammer 1 as well to get access to the Mortal Empires DLC which is the sandbox mod that involves all the factions from both games on one massive map. The campaign that comes with TW:WH2 while interesting, doesn't really have that much replayability.
