I played this game extensively pre-Steam for two years after its launch. When the old publisher Kakao ran it, it was punishing in it's microtransactions and incredibly PVP focused. Now that Kakao isn't in charge, the game has had a chance to flourish into a much more expansive story and tone down the worst of the monetization abuses. It still requires some money to play effectively, but now compared to a monthly sub MMO its reasonably priced and delivers on some of the best combat and life skill experiences in the entire genre.

Definitely high value for what you put in.

After the abomination that was the Langrisser re-make on Steam, Symphony of War is a breath of fresh air as a new and complete entry into the genre. It's art style and dialogue are a call back to the Fire Emblem, Ogre Tactics, and Final Fantasy Tactics series, replete tactical combat that is satisfying and complex. A fan of any of those games will find themselves right at home picking this up.

The game has some pacing issues. The first few waves of the rogue-lite loop, you're in for a slog. As you finally unlock a few permanent upgrades, the early stages get repetitive but easier. By the time you feel like you've got the pacing and flow down, the loop gets fun, and then abruptly it is over.

Strong narrative and difficult worker and supply management. It's the BSG boardgame, minus the Cylons but heavy on the ticking clocks and dwindling faith in your management skills. The ability to replay is limited, as you discover each of the major issues that can catch you out in each chapter, but it rewards calculated playing that balances risk and reward. It lacks Frostpunk's dramatic musical score and sense of impending doom, preferring the slow but steady demoralization as your leads run colder than the corpsicles you discover lurking in every post apocalyptic battlefield.

The best warcrimes simulator on the market. Keeps inventing new and more elaborate ways to invade a planet, enslave its people, gas their children, and ponder the unfathomable like how many xeno livers can I trade for one more advanced component.

They've fixed a lot of bugs, but the underlying design is still deeply flawed. The promise of an open world is all smoke and mirrors, with thin quests outside of the main story path. The main story can be done in a few hours, and the scaling based on hidden item levels, reputation, etc. isn't worth going through if you're just looking for Keanu. Get it on deep discount, run the story, forget about the rest.

This game was attrocious garbage at launch.

Now it's not. Lots to do. Very chill. Still repetitive, but now the ultimate goals are varied and the paths to get there a bit less grindy.

Destiny 2 is a relic of mid-00s designs, filled with souless characters, mind-numbing story, and imbalanced game play that pigeon holes every player decision into guessing some hack designer's intent. Wrapping this ♥♥♥♥ show in a blanket of even more ♥♥♥♥ is a greasy layer of sluggish netcode, microtransactions begging constantly for attention, and demands you buy the latest expac as they decommission any content you like because "Bungie Knows Better Than You".

Bungie shouts how they're "tip of the spear" in their forums, but in reality they just give you the shaft.
