I've been looking at this game since before it's release but bought it two days ago as an escape from an exam. Now. I'm a massive strategy-nerd so I didn't have a problem sinking 14 hours in to this game in just two days. I can't recommend it though.

So. The game looks cute. Few games make city-building look nice without you even trying. In this one whenever I got out of focusing on the next task I could really enjoy the view. The game is mostly self explanatory which works in its chill mood. I Also liked that you only defend your place and don't have to attack. I absolutely love that. The problems it has are unfortunately too many.

Not everything is intuitive. I would like to just choose a building and then see all the other ones I have of the same sort. Small details are missing like how the parks don't use the same paths (gravel or stone) as the roads around them. You can't move buildings which is a have to in a city builder mostly focused on making a beautiful little medieval town. After 2000 citizens there is only repetitive work left (That is actually true for 1000 citizens but it's not really bothersome until 2000). Which brings up the fact that the medium map is way too small. I know you can choose bigger but medium should be named small for this game. They tease you with these wonderful possibilities too build gates for your boats and walls in the water but it only work on 1-3 squares out in the water which means that it can only be done on certain maps.

The game is like a bad fan version of heroes of might and magic. the city buildings minimal and the fights aren't strategic enough. You mostly build up a bigger army than the other one. Also, ones you start a war it's relentless. This means you have to do more or less all the city building that you need before a war because after that it is all army all the time. I'm making this review short and fast cause the game isn't even worth writing properly about.

Firstly. This game looks great and the music is fitting. The story is alright. I liked it but never played for it so to speak. The main thing is the gameplay here. They’ve made the typing fun by doing several, for me, new things with it. You can level up for example and you can, mid fight, change your attacks. This is great. You have a chance to change attacks in a tactical fashion since the attacks work more or less well depending on the enemies walking towards you. How many they are, how many words they have left before death are things you need to keep in mind.

Even though I did like the gameplay i didn’t fall in love with it. This showed when I felt no need to do extra fighting after the story was done. They have you see, more platforms for fighting then necessary for either the story or leveling.

Conclusion. This is a really good typing game I think but I haven't played more than like one or two of these before, and then only as a tryout.

The game is charming as all hell. It has an old timey feeling with somewhat funny characters. The puzzles are fun and have several ways to be solved. It is made for a slightly younger audience, like 12-14, but is well made enough for adults as well.

The extra missions in “The hobo king” are not fun however. These outlive their welcome and feels like a ripoff of the original game.

This game looks great and the story is mystical and cool. The gameplay is ok with running and hiding from monsters and making choices during conversations.

The problem is the saving system. You kind of need to have 3-4 hours just playing this from start to end. this is not a game to go in and out of. This is a problem since the gameplay is one that would fit perfectly for jumping in, play 15-20 min and jump out. The gameplay is not fun enough to go for 4 hours straight. This is what killed it for me. I never felt like I had the time to play this since the saving is so sparse.

The game is great but have some technical flaws. At least on Linux. I can’t use the shield units because of this and I can’t switch between floors. This makes the late game impossible to play. I also can’t play it online with friend since they don’t have cross platform multiplayer. At least not in practise for Linux.

If these issues wasn’t there I would give it a thumbs up. The game is fun and challenging. It is some luck in there where the same tactics can work or not work depending on randomness. This is not a bad thing but rather a consequence of not having the levels being predictable.

The battles are nice and I like the smaller history lesson you get with it. I’m giving this a thumbs up but I am pissed about one thing. In campaign and whatever it’s not more than right that you can’t save during a battle. However, here in the historical battles you can play for like 40 min. Doing great. Choosing the wrong thing to do and loose just to be forced to play the 40 min exactly the same because that was the way to do it. You just messed up at the end. This is frustrating and boring. I get that it makes you more on the edge than if you could save whenever but I don’t think it’s worth it on these historical battles where you more or less need to find the one good way to do it. I see them as puzzles where you have to redo everything if you just put one piece wrong.

I felt no difference playing this clan vs playing anyone else.

I only have fall of the samurai (with included DLC:s) so that is what I’m going to review here.

I feel like the game is too strict. What I mean is that I don’t feel like you can go about things in different ways without making it harder on yourself. The units are way too few with little to no variation. I felt no difference in how the clans played.

The biggest flaw is how the campaign is time restricted in a way that forces you to rush rather than play it in your own time. I had to constantly take over new cities to make it just in time.

The boat battles are extremely boring as well.

Maybe the game is better if you have everything and not just fall of the samurai but I think you can get a better Total war game either way, like the new one for china (three kingdoms).
