The much maligned sequal to Dark Souls. While it does lack the elegance and cohesion in level design that the original had wonderfully mastered... that is about the only really bad thing I can say about it. Having played All three Dark Souls games and Bloodborne, Dark Souls 2: SFS is my favoirte out of the series. It did a lot of new things, it is the only game out of the series in which playing New Game + has any real meaning, and it balances combat well between DS1 and DS3s styles. The Former having an extremely slow and clunky combat system and the latter being too quck and based around dodging.

Memorable NPC's, Decent Graphics, interesting locations made possible only by delving into impossible geometry, a neat story all while managing to stay seperated from Dark Souls 1 but producing content of high enough quality that they brought it back for Dark Souls 3.

It may be heretical to some to say, but Dark Souls 2 despite getting nailed over minor issues, is probably the single best entry into the genre.

A good, if short, game to be played co-op with a friend.
Precision is key however. Don't skimp on describing stuff.

A beautiful game that constantly gets in the way of it'self.

It has interesting mechanics and great art but ultimately the repetitive nature of insta die if you mess up puzzles and poorly placed checkpoints make this more an excersize in frustration than a fun game.

I've got nothing aginst clicker games, idle games, or the like. They can be a fun diversion or something to just have running in the background to see how the numbers you can run up.

The main problem with this game is that you can litereally waste money on it. Not the figurative "I spent some cash on it and got some fun but now I got some remorse over it" literally waste money. Because the game resets your progress after each quest you take, taking you back to just 1 character at level 1 earning 1 gold per kill. You get to keep your equipment, but all the money you got from those paid chests? Gone. Those bounty contracts you get that give you extra money upon use? They scale to what your currently earning, so they go down in value. The money that comes out of the paid chest themselves do this as well so you get 700ish for opening one early and millions for opening them later in the quest.. but it all goes away, and so does your money.

People will defend it saying that after you finish a quest, the total gold you got translates into bonus gold find. The problem is there is no clear indication if the money you get from the paid chests actually counts towards the "earned" gold, and my own experiences with the game make me doubt that they do. Add in said gold find didn't seem to really do much.. It takes forever to accumlate a gold find that results in any noticible increase. Eventually that 1 monster that gave you one gold will give you 3! I only had to drop 11 hours into the game to get a very meager increase.

The idle part is also very.. It's not untrue, but you also won't get very far. There is no autobuy feature so you will have to keep coming back to tend to things if you want to get anywhere. Really at the start of any reset your looking at spending at least an hour minding it to get your character to a place they can actually idle and grind anywhere worthwhile. It's not wrong to say its an idle game as it will progress while your not playing.. it just really needs a lot of babysitting if you want to get anywhere.

Okay so what about if you don't drop any money on the game? It's free so it can't be that bad right?
Well.. its free, but its free with paid chests and.. it seems obviously scaled towards the gear you get out of those chests. There was a promotion to get a 700% weapon with any purchase and with that extra 700% damage on my main character I seemed to just barely be doing enough damage to make killing normal enemies smooth. Mind you at this point I was doing BILLIONS of damage per hit with just one character. Eventually you will be doing multiple trillians or quintillions of damage with any one character and barely be able to keep up with killing imps, rats, or cows.

you CAN eventually earn ONE of the paid chests through just playing the game.. 11 hours of actively having the thing running and baby sitting it I just barely managed to get enough gems
to get a gold chest. So theres that.
Its just not scaled or really set up in a way I can recommend. Maybe it's still appealing to someone but I'm going to say give it a pass. It's a shame because I really like Forgotten Realms but this seems like another case of WotC wanting just a bit too much for what they are giving you.


[update] For an example of how bad the scaling on this game gets if you do not put cash into it, they recently actived a limited time seasonal event. This event uses it's own currency and own cash multiplier meaning you start back at square 1 other than your chest found equipment.

Even with the equipment I got from the chests I did purchase, and the chests that I had earned via letting the game idle, I still was unable to complete the very first board using just Brueno and Celest, the only two champions you can easily get when your starting out fresh. They simply got swarmed and killed. Had i had more gold chest equipment I'm sure I would have been fine, but simply with what I had it was not enough, and the heroes jump in cost from 50 gold for Celest to 1k for Jamiah, a level of ingame currency your not going to be able to obtain when you cannot kill 25 first level bandits without getting swarmed and dying.

I enjoyed myself in this game and it took about 2 hours to complete.
..which is kind of the worrisome issue for me. I recommend the game to anyone who likes point and click adventures and even more to Homestuck fans but we are talking about a game that's been in development for almost 5 years and was supposed to come out several years prior.. A game that we were told would release in January but took till September to release the first Act of.. which only consists of a couple hours of gameplay.

With 3 more acts to go and another GAME to go after that, I'm really afraid this will end up like Broken Age where there is a strong first showing and then the rest takes forever and gets kinda phoned in.

For the price you can't go terribly wrong, but just be aware this might end up being another SiN episodes thing.

It's a fun game at times but ultimately everything is far far far too random for my tastes. That and the fact that its apparently extremely popular to simply just use a ruler because the base game doesn't have a wind factor.. really take this to a thumbs down imo

To start off, I've 100% completed this game and all of its achievments in 4 hours of gameplay.

I'm honestly not sure what to make of this game or the very positive reviews.

The actual gameplay is.. repetitive at best, tedious at worst. It's your standard "go into a room, room locks, leave room when enemies are dead" type game with a very basic hack and slash combat mechanic and a very small array of enemy types.

The story is.. very minimal. There is this whole side meta story thing going on but it just makes the game more tedious with its inclusion. The triggering event for all of it is always the same. Defy the narrator. Defy the Narrator, come to a room where something happens or your told something, and then the game forces you to restart the level. Forcing a restart in this game only makes it more tedious and you have to do this several times per level should you want to unlock all the side bits. Granted I ended up doing it all in under 4 hours but those were not 4 hours spent having fun, it was mostly 4 hours grinding through combat to get to the next branch and then reset. The ultimate payoff for all of this.. Is very underwhelming. Honestly the meta doesn't even really make sense, it's just kinda supposed to seem neat because it tries to link itself into a Mythos of someone elses creation.

Soundtrack is alright. But nothing special either.

While the remastered edition ups the graphics in many catagories, I still think the original version is the way to go.

I wish I could recommend this game purely for the experience but sadly the fact is that the story for the game is.. not that great. The gameplay constantly gets in the way of itself as well, inserting dumb mini games and glitched puzzles between story events. Given the story those things get in the way of isn't all that stellar.. it's a pass.

The games atmopshere and enviroment are probably the only good thing about it sadly. With less minigames, fixed up puzzles, and a longer story it could have gone for a Myst like experience. Instead it's sadly just clunky and buggy.
