This remake should be the golden standard for remaking old 2D games. The combination of 2D sprites and the 3D environment looks so stunning and beautiful. The QoL improvement makes the game fit into current industry standard.

I played the original and psp remaster version A LOT, and I can say that this is the best title in the series. And no I don't like 3 and don't even consider it canon because of the dumb plot twist that ruins the whole Star Ocean timeline and world buildings.

The story itself is pretty decent but nothing groundbreaking. What makes the game so good is the great character interactions, the addicting gameplay, the Iteam Creation that lets you break the game early.

The game also has a lot of replayability value because you have 2 different main characters that lets you view the story from different perspective, and 11 different party members to choose from, although there are certain restrictions for certain combination. Each different combinations you choose makes for different character interactions. There are 99 different endings for different combination of character based of their affinity to one another. You can get multiple endings in one playthrough so don't worry you won't have to do 99 playthrough.

And for me the best feature in the series is the Private Actions that lets you view interaction between certain characters, this is what makes the characters really alive in the game.

The whole Star Ocean series is set in one universe on certain time setting, and it has a great world buildings overall albeit with some inconsistencies.

So for those who likes fantasy scifi adventure rpg with addicting gameplay, I highly recommend this game, but prepare to be disappointed if you plan on following the whole series, because this is probably the best and only good Star Ocean title in my opinion. And no Star Ocean 3 does not exist, even if it has good gameplay.
