I don't like this game. It's boring and it seems really obvious immediately that I'm not making actual choices.

It's all 'say no to the peasant, gain 10 gold, get the bad ending' vs. 'say yes to the peasant, get 8 gold and 2 gold next week, get the good ending' level choice and consequence, too. nothing you do matters and there's no downsides to anything.

All the people on my friends list who are cool own this game. the people on my friends list who are OK have it wishlisted. One who is a complete psychogamer has played this game for over 200 hours. This game is one of those True Gamer defining games. I recommend it to any psychogamers out there.

I really like the Battletech universe, going back to when I was a kid. Mechwarrior 2 was one of those formative gaming experiences, and MW2 Mercenaries is one of the GOATs imo. Thats why it's such a bummer to say that this game blows.

It blows for a couple of reasons. The story sucks, the gameplay is broken, and the game has no respect for your time.

Lets talk story. Early in the game, you start working for this space princess and discover that her enemy has gulags. She gives this insane speech where she's talking about how she spent years hanging around in Cappellan palaces while her people died and she didn't pay any attention to them. Then everyone responds like 'wow, what a raw and heartfelt speech, this woman is a credit to her family of space kings.' It's surreal. Later on, someone blames her for sitting around doing nothing while his daughter was tortured to death. she sends you on a mission where she says 'he's right to be mad, i feel real bad about his dead son.' This character is just unbelievably selfish and unlikeable, to the point where she can't remember the gender of the dead kid, and the game just doesn't acknowledge it. You never get a chance to ditch her and work for her enemies, or even say 'wow, this awful lady is completely full of ♥♥♥♥.' you can only say 'you are truly noble, great lady' or 'you are truly noble, but i don't care, i just want money.' it's terrible writing. There's a lot of it in there, lazy speechifying, weird characters, nonsensical ideas; that's just an example.

Gameplay. My main beef with the gameplay is as follows: if you take any damage at all to your head component, your pilot is gonna get wounded and be out for weeks. This includes damage that doesn't penetrate armor. That means that if you get sprayed down with a machine gun or shot with srms, the odds of you taking a hit to the head that round are pretty high, and the two points of damage you take will incapacitate your pilot after the fight. three or four more rounds of that and your pilot is dead, having taken eight damage total to their 60 head armor. There are tanks that fire 30 srms at you at once. you're going to lose all your pilots fighting them. It's stupid and should have been noticed in playtesting; if your pilot only got wounded when the armor was stripped or when you took a head crit, this would be a reasonable mechanic.

No respect for your time: THIS GAME IS INCREDIBLY SLOW. For some idiotic reason they actually added a delay to firing, on purpose. So you choose to fire some missiles, autocannons, and lasers at an enemy. your mech marches over, turns towards the enemy, pauses for a second, fires missiles, pauses for a second, fires autocannons, pauses for a second, fires lasers. Then there's a cinematic where you zoom around watching the mechs get hit or something This is fine at first, you don't even notice. but this is a game where you're playing dozens of rounds, firing four times a round most of the time, and all your enemies are firing and pausing too. it's glacial. You can turn off the Blam Cam cinematic stuff but you can't turn off the pausing or some of the zooming and it's just horrendous.

There are also unskippable cutscenes every time you move to a different planet. You're moving between planets a lot this game, every couple of missions at least, and so there will be dozens of times where you will watch your ship fly into space, jump to lightspeed, appear near a jumpship, dock with the jumpship, which then jumps, then appears again, THEN JUMPS AGAIN IF ITS A MULTISYSTEM DROP, potentially multiple instances of this, then undocks with the jumpship and jumps away. every time this happens a minute of your life is gone, never to return. this cutscene never ever varies. Battletech, and by extension Harebrained Schemes, thinks your time has no value.

Basically what i'm saying is give this pile a wide berth.

Once you get past the initial aesthetic and atmosphere you realize that pretty much everything about this game sucks and it is miserable to play. Give this pile a wide berth.

I really wanted this to be a good game. It is not. It's a well-polished clicker game where you right click on guys to train them, click on other guys to research or bribe dudes or whatever, just click all the time. Every so often you pick a dude or dudes to fight in the arena. this gets you money which you use to buy your dudes better armor. There's not a lot of strategy, or a lot of actually doing anything other than clicking on dudes as soon as you can, then waiting on the training cooldown to click dudes again. I hated it and refunded it. Sorry, dev.

This game is an absolute gem. You can really see the love that went into making it, in the art, the music, and especially the incredibly tight mechanics. The score system is really intuitive and fun (rack up an eight kill streak, then fire your special weapon for a 'flourish' and watch points roll in), the movement is fluid and the bullet patterns are challenging but fair. When I die, and I've died a lot, it's never frustrating because it's always clear to me what i did wrong and how I messed up. The exuberance of the VA yelling "game over!" also helps. Shes just so psyched to see me dead that I can't be mad.

the variety of weapons and setups is really cool, i've spent a good amount of time fooling around with different arrangements and characters. There are two characters, each of whom has similar (but not identical) main attacks, but a range of powerful special moves that are mostly unique to them. Some special moves are defensive, some spray missiles across the screen, while others are just a single powerful missile that fires straight ahead or a mega-laser that wipes out everything in your way. You get to pick a single special gun for each run and it really changes up how I play.

I'm disastrously bad at the game, but it's got an easy mode (normal) that I'm struggling though and every run is a blast. I've also played a fair amount of Hyper mode, where i am ashamed to say I can't even beat the second boss. Hyper mode is the default difficulty, and is a very clever difficulty level that adapts to how well you are doing: die a bunch and it's indistinguishable from normal mode, but rack up a bunch of great combos and flourishes, and the next thing you know you're in full on hard mode. speaking of which, the hard mode (called parallel) starts you at the max-combo difficulty right off the bat, and I'm sure it's more than enough to satisfy actual shmup players.

I really like this game and i hope to someday not suck at it. I recommend it to anyone who likes videogames.

Brigador is really cool. I've been playing it for a long time and it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥ better and better. It's a great looking game with tricky but well crafted controls, and strong, intuitive mechanics. and a lot of work has gone into making it hard without making you hate it or want to quit. This isn't a roguelike, but you will need to cultivate true roguelike spirit to play Brigador: you will die often, it will always be fair and your deaths will come from your own mistakes or overconfident actions, and the only good response is to roll up a new brigador and try again. There are a ton of vehicles and guns and the combinations lead to pretty wildly divergent playstyles.

The 'setting' and 'lore' are all under the surface. you won't be reading morrowind books here, you'll just get a feel for the world from the experience of playing in it and destroying your home city and everyone you ever cared about or knew for a fat stack of cash and a ticket offplanet.

I look forward to the brigador dating sim sequel.

This game is better than the games it is imitating. It's better than Baldurs Gate. Better than Planescape. This is the single best RPG in this style ever made.

I wanted to like this game, I really did. I love space sims and up to a point, Starpoint Gemini seemed like a great game. Better starship fighting than the X series, the potential for becoming the admiral of a whole space fleet, exploring the galaxy, or building an elite-like mercantile empire all sound awesome.

unfortunately the reality falls short. at most you can have two allied ships, plus a few fighters. The spaceflight is boring and the bigger ships just don't feel any different than the early freighters and fighters. There's no heft to a giant battlecruiser compared to the very first ship you get, they feel like the same size ship only with a few extra equipment slots on the top tier guy. all in all, the scale of this game is disappointing. Compare it to a game like Freespace, which came out over a decade ago, and it's pretty inexcusable.

The trading is simplistic. i don't want a spreadsheet game like X3 but there's really no joy in going to a planet, buying all the green-hilighted cargo, then cruising around with it in your bays until you find a decent price. This is often poorly implemented in games and unfortunately starpoint gemini 2 is the same.

the game I'd most compare it to is Freelancer, which was a decent to mediocre arcade spacefighter with pretty minimal trade. the story in this game is even worse than freelancer, though. At least Freelancer was funny. The combat is frankly worse, this game would benefit enormously from a little cursor leading your enemies telling you where to shoot if you want to hit them. the ship design is also worse.

the place it really falls down is in the locations, though. There are no people to talk to, at all. and you don't even get missions from planets, tehy just appear on your map while you cruise around. planets are just there to buy stuff and repair your ship. Remember the really goofy "We don't own this station, but we have an arrangement with the people who do" barks that people on stations had in Freelancer? Well compared to this game that was Planescape Torment level dialogue. There are no real factions to have relationships with, just a good/evil slider with each faction having a set affinity for good or evil. pass 79 good guy points? Well the East Nobody Trader Guild now likes you instead of being neutral, because their threshold is 78. it doesn't matter if you've never encountered that trade guild, have blown up their ships in the past, have done missions for their enemies. all that matters is that you're generally decent.

the voice acting is intolerably bad. that's really vanishingly low on my list of priorities, though. Voice acting is expensive and in a game like this doesn't add much. but still, it's really bad.

Positive things:
you can shoot spaceships
you can fly around in a spaceship
if you choose your portrait, there's a funny one of a fat guy with a cybereye. check him out: http://i.imgur.com/8jaXinq.png
seriously that fat cybereye guy owns. I'm taking that portrait and putting it into other games
