GRIS is undeniably one of the most well-constructed experiences the video game medium has ever produced. At its core it’s a puzzle platformer but to describe it only as such would be a mockery of its name. Between jaw-droppingly gorgeous artwork, captivating music, and intuitive gameplay it grabs and retains your care and attention through a just-over-three-hour trial of quiet desperation turned tearful determination. A slow and painful crescendo from a hopeless whisper to a powerful and expressive cry of resistance and understanding. It’s an interactive journey through which you, as well as the character you play, fall into and try to find a way out of the shadows we can so frequently find ourselves struggling in. GRIS is a compelling narrative that never speaks a single word. Through meticulous visual and musical storytelling this game urges you through the far reaches of human emotion while disregarding the support of language and speech. Much less is it a game to me than a memory, a personal experience.

GRIS is a video game, sure, but even outside of this genre of media it stands tall as a work of art. This is exactly the kind of thing I long to create one day, sharing these kinds of affairs and giving other people a road to walk through. Something gratifying, something trying, something worthwhile. As a game, as a soundtrack, as a visual experience, as an emotional journey, and as a completed whole, a voyage of another kind, it earns only and absolutely the highest marks. It has left a taste on my tongue that will surely inspire a life-long journey to satisfy.
