If you're looking for an epic 4x space strategy game like Endless Space, Galactic Civilizations 1-3, or something else, this is not that game. If you are looking for a game with spreadsheets and lists, this is not that game. If you're looking for a game where you command hundreds of ships divided into multiple fleets, this is not that game. If however you're looking for a lite 4x space strategy game that includes tactical combat and can be played start to finish in a few hours, then this might be worth consideration.

The unique element of this game is how it's focused around your single fleet of ships. In the beginning of the game, the fleet is not very strong. However given enough resources it can grow in size (up to 8 ships) and strength to become a formidable force in the galaxy. You'll be faced with the decision of choosing between engines, shields, armor, and different weapons. Do you continue to upgrade your existing ships or buy more ships to add to the fleet? Do you choose speed over armor? Do you build out your ships for specific roles? What tech do you research to compliment your upgrade strategy? Then there are wonders which further enhance your fleet and can provide huge advantages. You'll also find battle cards which provide bonuses during missions.

Another fun element of the game are the missions. When you visit other planets you'll be faced with missions that range from escorting transport ships while protecting them from pirates, escaping with sympathizers aboard your flagship, defeating waves of attacking ships, and so on. Successfully completing missions will provide influence or other rewards.

As for the complaints about this being a tablet or mobile game, it is true that the options screen is missing some common options available on PC games, the game isn't a true full screen in that the taskbar isn't hidden, and the screen doesn't scroll automagically when the mouse hits the edge. However none of these things have prevented me from playing the game. The map can be moved with either the arrow keys or the left mouse button. The taskbar can be set to auto-hide if it's that distracting (or just deal with it). In regards to price, I do think that PC gamers unfortunately do end up paying a premium over the mobile platforms. This isn't the first game and it won't be the last.

Finally, in regards to expectations, I think people saw Sid Meier's name along with this being set in space and left their expectations unchecked. First, the low price point should have been a major indicator that this wasn't going to be anywhere near the scale of a Civilization game. Second, a Sid Meier games doesn't automatically infer an epic game. The past few years 2K/Firaxis have had smaller Sid Meier titles such as Ace Patrol, Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies, and Civilization Revolutions which were on the mobile platform.

When I took over responsibility of the family estate, I had big dreams. Those dreams were quickly shattered as the first adventurers emerged from the dungeon highly stressed and borderline crazy raving about ungodly abominations. They pleaded not to be sent back in, but I didn't listen. They never came back. Months later, I've come to accept that it's best not to ask names nor look at their faces. I look away, pointing to the pile of cheap torches and shake my head.

They're not coming back... at least the lucky ones don't.

The less unfortunate ones will never be the same.

This is Grimdark.

This is a surprisingly good game. If you're into RPGs and you see it on sale, grab it! A controller is highly recommended!

My one complaint is that I wish there was more combat cause it's a lot of fun. I often want to jump right into another mob and just keep going. Otherwise there's a lot this game gets right. The quick travel is a great feature. I mean, who wants to spend hours just running back and forth. With this, you just click on points of the map and go. So much more to say, but I want to get back to gaming. So stop reading and go buy it!

This is a fantastic game. There's just something about this game that has me hooked.

I love the humor which is just right in that it doesn't try to hard and isn't repetitively obnoxious. It doesn't take too long to level and so far (at 8 hours in) doesn't feel overly grindy. It scratches that JRPG without the terrible grind. I'm also loving the art / feel of this game. The variety of outfits is nice and they also look great. The creatures are cute.

You know it's a good game when you realize that it's 2am and everyone else in the house has gone to bed. You'll be there too... after a few more hours.

I wish I could give this game away and purge all record of having bought this game. Even though I bought it when it was 75% off, I still regret having paid even that much for it.

Turn based combat system? Yes please!

One thing I appreciate about the game is that so far I haven't encountered any battles that felt repetitive. The maps, the environments, interactive elements on the maps (starting fires ftw!), and the variety of opponents have kept it fresh so far. Of course I need to state that I'm only on Chapter 2 at this point, so maybe that changes. Some battles have been easy enough, others have been challenging. There's been a few battles that I've had to retry but it's been a fun challenge, not a drain on my enjoyment of the game.

So far, I'm loving this game and have been looking forward to playing it as time permits. I started over 6 hours into the game to switch from a basic character to an expert (custom) character. Having become more familiar with the game, I wanted to be able to customize my character more. I'm 20+ hours into this game and I'm still enjoying it which is a positive sign!

The game looks great. The animations are great. I like the subtle animations on the screen. I like the battle animations. The story so far is okay (I'm only 4 hours into it at this point). I will admit that when I saw the first line "The gods are dead" I rolled my eyes and thought great, it's a cliche in the first line of the game.

The combat is different. Having armor and strength, having to make a decision as to which attack to make -- break armor to reduce the armor and allow subsequent attacks to do more damage or attack strength which in turn lowers the amount of damage they can do on their strength attack. Break armor attacks however are unaffected by strength, so those almost dead enemies can still pose a risk. There's a disadvantage in eliminating low health enemies while there are strong enemies still on the board.

The willpower attribute is interesting in that you have a limited amount of points that can be used in strengthening attacks or moving further. Characters are limited in how much willpower they can expend, which also can be raised. This pool is limited but willpower can be gained when an enemy is killed and there are some characters that can add willpower to other characters through abilities.

Here's what I don't like... the slow moving caravan moves slowly. The world looks great, but I really don't like waiting minutes for the caravan to crawl across the screen to the next destination. I get it, it's probably for effect or immersiveness, but please... can I just fast forward please? The caravan leaves... moving slowly... moving... then an event pops up. Read through it, resolve, hopefully a battle, then back to the slowly... moving... caravan. *sigh*

After 4 hours I got up from playing the game and went to look at the time, thinking surely it was hours later than it was. I was surprised it was only 4 hours. It felt much longer. If this was non-stop action, that would be a good thing. For this, not so much.

With that said, I like the game so far. I don't regret the pre-order, but I'd be hardpressed to recommend it to someone at $25 unless I was really sure they'd like it. My recommendation is to find the free to play multiplayer "Banner Saga: Factions" and give it a shot. If you're okay with the combat system, then maybe consider the singleplayer version.

I thought Saints Row III was fun, but this is even more fun with the addition of super powers! If you find this on-sale, consider adding it to your collection.

The super powers had me nostalgic for City of Heroes. Being able to jump over buildings, run at super speeds, and kick/punch enemies high into the sky was so much fun that at times I forgot what I was supposed to be doing. There's a number of additional powers to unlock as well. Then there's the character outfits... there should be an achievement for the number of hours one will spend adjusting one's wardrobe.

I have enjoyed playing this game more than Torchlight II and Diablo 3. The story is decent, but the it's the overall theme and environment that does it for me. Then there's Katarina! I love her character.
