MOTIVE has created not only excellent gameplay, but also a more compelling story and characters than we've gotten in the Star Wars franchise in a long time.

I was a bit worried this would not play well on keyboard and mouse, but it actually plays perfectly. It's in the 'easy to learn, hard to master' category for me.

The different starfighters are unique, with their very own cockpit, and have many customization options that really make them feel different and specialized at certain tasks. It's well-explained what to expect from these mods as well.

The story campaign had me really invested and lets us see the conflict from both sides, in a way I haven't experienced before. Empire characters are still villains, but not faceless evil-for-the-sake-of-it goons as we're used to, you can actually see where they're coming from and how they became who they are.

This shows an attention to detail and effort that could've easily been skipped to simply make it 'Battlefront in Space'!

Missions are varied and the tactics and strategies used by both sides actually make sense. Not only do you feel like you're part of actual Star Wars space battles, you also feel like you're part of an actual, believable war. The only thing I felt could improve is making capital ships be able to move more significantly, rather than simply feeling like stationary targets.

The writing and dialogue is really clever and I felt compelled to hear out my squadmates and learn more about them in between missions much like in the Mass Effect franchise. Just wish I could take a more active part in the interactions with my pilots, but that's no doubt a budget issue.

Multiplayer I haven't touched yet, but I imagine it can be great fun if you can get some buddies together and strategize and coordinate together. Even without that it's no doubt going to be a challenging and intense experience.

The groundwork is fantastic. What we need now is MORE. Continuation of the story (it's perfectly set up for it...), more fighters (B-Wing and TIE Defender were already announced, hopefully more to come), more options (like real character customization), more game modes...

I hope EA gives MOTIVE the green light for it and the budget to make more things happen, despite earlier announcements that this wouldn't happen, as this dev really deserves it and Star Wars fans like myself are having an itch scratched by this game that 'other' Star Wars media hasn't really done recently.

10/10 would blow up Rebel Scum again.

An excellent remaster. Hopefully Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2 get the same treatment.

In terms of content, this DLC delivers. The campaign it adds is similar to the original Invasion campaign in size.

Compared to that campaign, I'd say the missions in this one are better designed and more varied. It's also a different experience due to how the Empire plays, both in terms of tactics as in how they deal with settlements.

The two branching paths offer more replayability as well. The story is decent, the characters act in a consistent manner throughout it.

New features, such as trading and training your units give you some more control and allow you to specialize units or make them a lot stronger. This way you'll end up deciding between having better or having more troops most of the time.

Towards the end, the campaign might get a bit repetitive (with even the newer enemy types being used a lot), but not so much that it will stop you from being able to finish it, I think.

All in all another solid effort in this franchise, and hopefully not the last thing we'll see!

16/09 Edit: I changed my review because there was a game breaking bug that not only stopped me from being able to get out of a mission, but also ruined my entire playthrough because I had no other saves to return to before the game got stuck. The gameplay is less complex than XCOM and XCOM 2, but still pretty smooth and rewarding. The biggest drawback is that your characters are a bunch of annoying teenagers (most of them, anyway) who don't take anything seriously, have to comment on everything, don't feel alien at all and say the most out of place stuff (like 'Gross! You're bleeding!' when a squadmate gets shot). However, that doesn't ruin the experience by any means if you're willing to look past it.Some of us might feel disappointed that after fighting tooth and nail in XCOM and XCOM 2 against the aliens, they're now fully integrated into society. Of course the good thing about that is that you get to control alien soldiers this time around. If you're looking for a more casual XCOM experience and don't take it too seriously, the game is enjoyable enough.

The game looks good, sounds good and plays smoothly (apart from occassional bad Dreadnought pathing and abilities being targeted on the ground instead of on a vehicle even if you click the vehicle).

The poster character, Inquisitor Adrastia, only fulfills a small (but important) role in the story unless you play the Imperial Guard.

The story is interesting enough, with some cool cinematics, but also the usual 40k issue of characters behaving almost completely irrationally at times. It's also rather short, especially if you don't do the side missions, and parts feel rushed.

Harder difficulty is recommended if you've played the base game and expansion (which you probably have). The game would've been much better if you had to rely on units more than overpowered hero characters, which can smash through any number of enemies due to a ridiculous amount of passive and active abilities.

It is fun to watch your guys wreak untold levels of destruction regardless, but if you're looking for a tactical challenge normal difficulty will be an absolute breeze to you and not fulfilling. The second to last mission I was able to simply A-move without even using abilities, in the last mission enemy tanks were blowing up from single shots before I could even use abilities on them...

The campaign has some replayability thanks to having multiple factions available, but the missions are also always the same apart from some slight changes, and every mission pretty much comes down to 'run across the map and kill everything'. Space Marines are also the only canonical campaign, so the replayability should not be overstated.

All in all a good game recommended for fans of the 40k universe, despite a few flaws.

Paper thin story, but fun campaign. Taldeer deserved better.

Strategy tends to simply come down to securing enough economy, then recruiting the best units and making a death blob that pushes forward, since microing anything but abilities (due to the pathfinding) or even knowing exactly what's going on is hard, but the carnage and mayhem that ensues is fun regardless.

Frooom the Lightniiing aaand the Tempeeeest Empraaahh deliver uuuss.

The Sisters of Battle are a zealous bunch on par with the Space Marines in their devotion to the Emperor and their willingness to wipe out file xenos filth with righteous bolter fire.

If that appeals to you you'll soon find yourself chanting along their sermons as you command them to purge alien hovel after alien hovel.

The story is a bit silly, with forces loyal to the Emperor slaughtering each other for no real reason, while there's plenty of xenos to purge, but there's plenty of hammy dialogue that's birthed several memes (METAL BAWKSES!) and is very enjoyable as well. A true 40k experience.

Some aspects of the game are pretty dated (pathfinding especially) but despite that there have hardly been any RTS's that nailed it as much as this game and there have been none that managed to do this and include so many of the major 40k factions (all but Tyranids).

One of the best strategy games ever. Deserves a proper modern sequel that maintains the core aspects and the scope, and expands on them. Failing that (it's been 14 years and they haven't managed it, so...) a remaster could be pretty sick.

Worth buying if you liked the base game.

The story is better (albeit rather short), the mission design is better and there's a new companion and more different guns to play around with.

If you like the idea of leading a small group of space marines across relatively small maps, fighting fast-paced tactical battles against huge numbers of orcs, eldar and tyranids, then this is a good game for you.

The battles are fast-paced and rely mostly on you equipping your squad adequately, positioning them properly and using the right abilities at the right time. Your Space Marines get ridiculously powerful though, and if they fall you can revive them, so I guess unless you want to challenge yourself on higher difficulties towards the end they will simply start to feel like gods crushing ants.

You have to suspend your disbelief a little that 10-ish Space Marines with barely any armoured support can wipe out the finest armies of the Eldar and Tyranids and stop a Greenskin incursion almost without breaking a sweat.

It doesn't have the base building and strategy aspect of the first Dawn of War, so don't come looking for that, because you'll end up disappointed.

The game has good production value and voice acting, the Space Marines have differing characters (for as much as this is possible with Space Marines) and their interactions are somewhat interesting. The story is not really compelling, since everyone just acts as a massive force of destruction and acts without reason beyond that. It is 40k, after all.

I won't say it's the best game I ever played, but it was a good ride while it lasted.
