Early Access Review
This isn't Post Scriptum, or Squad, or even a first-person Company of Heroes, but it does fill an interesting void in the realm of "hardcore-tacticool-realism" games. It has all the functions of PS or Squad, but without all the pressure. It still requires teamwork, but much less to get things done. It can be lone-wolfy, it can be highly squad-based. This freedom really doesn't exist in PS or Squad. You don't even need a Squad Leader to have a squad going, you won't have the best time, but you can still play, and this makes it an awesome gateway drug into the more hardcore games. This game does what PS and Squad did, with a more casual Red Orchestra spin.

The maps feel big enough, with plenty of detail and things to hide behind, or try to hide behind. And I mean these maps are detailed. Even more than these terrible new Battlefield games. Interiors are cluttered and feel lived in, making indoor fighting really hectic. The gameplay can be brutal, but you aren't punished for dying. Teammates can easily place team-wide spawn points with just a squad leader and a support role. No supply runs that nobody wants to do anyway. No support guy in your squad? No problem, squad leader can request a supply drop from the Commander. You can even look up your K/D ratio. These player freedoms lend to that more casual experience. It's just really fun.
HLL also has very interesting, looked over details. When you headshot someone, there is the now-common helmet "ping", but it sounds more distant, more satisfying and less startling. Bodies buckle to the way they were shot, a short physic-based animation plays, and the ragdoll kicks in. This paired with ragdolls staying on the ground for long periods of time can really set the tone for the brutality of the situation. It's bloody glorious. Even barbed wire affects ragdolls, making them look twisted and their clothing snagged on the barbs. It's really quite brilliant and once noticed can really change your perspective on things. Oh and the limbs and pink mist flying through the air is a very welcome feature. Who doesn't love gibs?

All in all, as early in development as this game is, it is truly a blast to play. Save your energy for Squad or Post Scriptum for when you want that experience. This game offers the same package, more detail, and less pressure. It doesn't always work, but for most of the matches I have played, I very much enjoyed my time. The future looks bright for this one, so let's dawn those cool guy shades and ride into the sunset, smiling as the blood rains down on our faces.
