As somebody who loves studying design of games, and someone who absolutely hates horror, Lethal Company is genius. It manages to be among the scariest things I've ever played while not even once having to rely on cheap scares.

It gives you this rich environment that starts off as this alien environment, but you warm up to it very quickly, and each moon and facility seed becomes entirely predictable within just 60-90 minutes or so of gameplay. Even with the game literally spelling out things to you through the environment, it always managed to catch me off guard. Horror in this game is a perfect gradient that starts from unsettling and ends up nightmare-ish. Hydrogeres, while in practice unchallenging and tame, are still deeply unpleasant to meet. Hoarding bugs and snare fleas are the closest this game gets to FNaF level of cheap jumpscares, but are still very unfun to encounter. Thumpers are absolutely horrifying and Brackens are the bane of my existence. It's not all just about the monsters though, the facility, even though it's randomly generated, manages to constantly make horrifying liminal spaces that sometimes just straight up made me leave. If you have any kind of fear of the dark, the unknown, the depths, etc., a flashlight is a MUST. I'm beyond jealous of my friends that can just walk into the darkest rooms, grab stuff and leave unscathed.

If you have any fear or phobia, this game WILL exploit it to its advantage and you become a major burden on your team for the simplest reasons. It's unapologetic in its execution and it WILL tear you apart. I'm basically useless in this game unless I'm accompanied by another person. Despite it giving you every chance and opportunity to set up and outplay a situation, it effortlessly manages to make you feel helpless and that your best option is to just give up and let whatever it is that is attacking you just end your suffering.

Again, I despise horror, but this kind of constant ups and downs in adrenaline and being able to share it with friends first-hand is what keeps me coming back. I suffer every second I am in this game and I love it. There is so much to adore when analyzing what the dev got just right. The only things that need improving are the sometimes floaty and imprecise jumping controls and more content. It loses its sense of mystery too quickly, everything clicks in place pretty much instantaneously after a few encounters and after that, unless you have crippling fears, you can beeline your way through the moon, meet 3/4 of your quota from just that one moon, even before nightfall.

Overall, well worth the 9.75 euros it asks for, an absolute joy to play with friends, and an utter nightmare all-round.

Other than some weird ass autosave triggers, weird difficulty spikes and general old game jank, it's nuts how well this game holds up today, a must play

Well, after it promptly sat in my backlog for 6 months, I finally beat Budget Cuts, and oh man do I have some thoughts.

First off, they absolutely nailed the mechanics. Since it's an older game, it only has teleportation controls for movement. However, this isn't a bad thing. You move by shooting an orb where you want to teleport. It can ricochet against walls and obstacles, and also gives you a nice little preview of where you'll end up. This can also be used to attract foes, which I think is brilliant.

Also, the atmosphere and art style of the game has aged remarkably well. It's so fun to just see these robots go through their day, constantly saying dystopian capitalist one liners about their job. Even better is that not all robots share the same enthusiasm, so you'll meet robots that are super happy about working 7 day weeks, and robots that sound like they're dreading everything they do. Even though it by every metric should become annoying, it never did. I looked forward to seeing these friendly robots amidst all the military robots and dead space.

However, those are the only things that have aged well with Budget Cuts. Everything else just sucks when compared to what other games are doing. For starters, the map design. It is absolutely dreadful. You have barely any indication of where something *might* be located, and a lot of things just leave you to guess where you need to go and what you need to do. Playing this with a guide is a MUST, otherwise have fun getting frustrated over the stupidest puzzle designs I've ever seen in a game, let alone VR.

Now, the ending. It's the most f-ed up difficulty spike I've ever seen, and it's absolutely inexcusable. The game turns from a puzzle-stealth game into a G-Mod nextbot escape map with absolutely no hints of what to do in order to progress. I've seen walkthroughs where people SOFTLOCKED the final boss or GLITCHED THROUGH THE ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ WALLS in order to get the final key to progress. It took me an embarrasing amount of time to understand what I need to do, even with a guide on how to do it "properly".
The most ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up part is that this isn't just me being stupid and lost, THIS IS A REAL ISSUE. You know how games give you achievements for beating them, and they usually have finish rates of about 50-30%-ish players beating it? THIS GAME HAS LESS THAN 7%. YOU LITERALLY GET A SHINY ACHIEVEMENT, JUST FOR BEATING A GAME.
What's really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up, is that the game isn't even that long. If you know what you're doing, you can beat it in an hour and a half, and it just holds you up for the worst reasons. My first run took me about 5 hours, and I'm not touching the game anymore for at least another 6 months.

Overall, I'd recommend this game only on sale and if you don't mind needing to have a guide on stand-by to beat the game. For me, its charm outweighs the mentally ill level and puzzle design.

Joining Beat Saber and Rec Room in my "turn on whenever you can't decide what to play" camp is Pistol Whip.

This game is dangerously fun. One minute you're just vibing to the music and shooting bad guys, the very next your VR headset and shirt are drenched in sweat, you're pulling off like 50 squats a minute dodging bullets while dual wielding revolvers, and your body just takes it in. I'm not in the greatest shape, and after 30 mins of uninterrupted playing during the free weekend, my legs started to hurt. However, my brain just cancelled out the pain and I ended up playing for at least an hour more until I took off the headset to put away and go to bed.

Graphically, it's gorgeous, and it manages to still look unique while sharing the same low-poly art style as a number of other Unity games. The music choices and level design are awesome and both compliment each other very well. I'd just like for there to be more campaigns.

Overall, no complaints here. Buy the game.

What I expected to be a neat little sequel to A Fisherman's Tale with a couple more puzzles, ended up being a beautiful game about love, acknowledging your past, legacy and cherishing memories, with some of the most boundary-breaking puzzle mechanics I've seen in virtual reality, PERIOD. It's very well optimized graphically (ran high settings at a stable 120fps on an R5 5600X and 3070 Ti PC driving a Vive Pro 2 at 2600 x 2600 per eye res) and it controls well too, but the "grip to pull back hands" mechanic is WAY too sensitive on Index controllers. Wasn't an issue for me, but if you sometimes like just randomly gripping your controllers, look into rebinding the game's control scheme. I think what really needed more work were the disconnected hand controls, turning is an absolute nightmare most of the time.

Despite its quirks, I can't recommend this game enough. Even if the story doesn't do it for you, the puzzles will.
