UPDATE (04/18/25): Now that I've gotten a new GPU and the game has had recent updates that have improved performance, the game is actually quite a lot of fun.

Unfortunately this game still requires that users be within a certain tax bracket if they want to play on PC, and even then it's not entirely guaranteed that the game will work, as even high-powered GPUs will sound like a jet engine taking off when this thing runs.

The game is better optimized now, but I think the biggest mistake was thinking RE Engine could run an open, living world game like Monster Hunter, at least for PC. As far as I'm aware, your best experience playing this game is on the PS5. Here's hoping they learn from this in the future and have a game that better matches their benchmark for PC release.

This being said, if you ARE able to run this game, I recommend it.

OLD REVIEW (release day):
--
The first hour of my experience with this game is attempting to get the game to boot. The rest was spent running the game in compatibility mode because it otherwise crashed, but I'm left running on invisible terrain with flashing textures/particles.

Troubleshooting and support did not assist with the issue at all. The full release is entirely different from the benchmark - why is it the benchmark ran perfectly fine but suddenly the game itself is wildly (pun not intended) unplayable for a huge chunk of your PC player base?

I cannot recommend the game until it's properly optimized.

Early Access Review
I like low-poly graphics, I like classic MMOs, and I like short stacks.

For an Early Access game with not a lot of content in it yet, 10/10.

Genuinely love this game, both for the fishing and for the social aspect. Everything about this is extremely cute and is a real chill time when I play with friends. I would LOVE if there were other animal head/tail customizations in the future!

Genuinely one of the best and most immersive horror narrative experiences of the year, if not THE best. This is game of the year for me. I cannot recommend this game enough. 100/10, PLEASE make more.

EDIT (05/05/24)

After the absolutely scummy move Sony pulled, effectively alienating hundreds of thousands of players from playing a game they paid for, I've switched my review from positive to negative. Every good thing this game had going for it is now trashed because of corporate ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Sony took this amazingly successful game and wiped their asses with it.

I finally understand what the Company is. It's a factory that turns regular players into S-tier voice actors.

It's a really fun, head-empty kind of MMO that I feel scratches that itch for Diablo-like gameplay AND fulfills that need for grind if you're an absolute masochist like I am.

I really must stress this; if you do NOT enjoy grindy games, Lost Ark is NOT for you! I personally like a game that I can play to kill time, and grinding tends to do that for me.

Pros:
- Combat feels so nice in this game; it's super fast-paced and it's really satisfying to clear 100 mobs in a few swipes (depending on class).
- Despite how ridiculous some side quests are (moving boxes five feet from their starting point, talking to a guy right next to the quest-giver, etc), they are either on the way to your main objective or is sitting right on top of it, so you don't have to go so far to earn some extra coin & exp.
- Dungeons are this game's bread and butter - absolutely the best parts overall and what I look forward to the most with every new map I unlock.
- The fact that I can respec my skill points freely, on the fly, and have multiple presets just absolutely tickles my pickle. Love when MMOs allow me to customize my skills and experiment freely without the added cost of spending igc or, in worst cases, real money.

Cons:
- The story is absolutely garbage, imho. If you wanted to play this game for its story, you're going to be sorely disappointed. Made worse if you play with the English VA on.
- Much like FFXIV, chat is plagued with RMT bots spamming links to scam sites that is likely tricking gullible vulnerable players into giving scammers money for in-game currency. Feels like it's not being properly addressed. Absolutely keep your chat window minimized.
- This game broke my G key

Overall definitely a solid 7/10
A lot to fix in terms of the post-launch issues, but the devs seem to be on top of it. It's a F2P game that doesn't require a single penny to advance; if you got time to kill, absolutely give this game a try.
