While I loved the campaign, I'm enjoying Career Mode even more. Playing without those huge rewards and without those free medium, heavy and assault mechs makes things a lot more interesting. I had to play with a much greater variety of chassis, particularly light mechs (the Jenner has my respect now), for a good while before I could scavenge some heavier mechs to tackle harder missions.

Speaking of harder missions, there's a new one out there that's quite interesting, requiring you to run across the map to place 3 beacons in widely separated spots and hold there for two rounds (all in 8 rounds), while being attacked by a swarm of light and medium mechs. I got the idea it was supposed to be done with fast medium or light mechs, but I have no idea how I'd do that (I powered through with "fast" assault mechs with no trouble though).

Flashpoints are great: slightly larger tidibits of story within the big Career Mode sandbox. Their stated difficulty can be misleading, though. I did that first Steiner Flashpoint with my endgame campaign lance and it was easy enough (though there's no way I managed to prevent all buildings from being destroyed in the base defense mission), then I saw it show up early in my career mode game and tried to tackle it with a medium-heavy lance, only to fail miserably in defending the base. Doing it again later (thankfully they did offer it again) with a considerably heavier lance worked (but base defense was still a bit tough, I guess I need to invest in multishot for that mission). I then thought all Flashpoints would be this hard, but the next two I did (criminal minds and head hunting) were pretty adequate for their stated difficulty. I'd still recommend you take your best pilots and mechs to the later missions - the first missions, however, are a good place to train newer pilots as they aren't that tough and give decent experience. I haven't tried the faction alliance flashpoints yet, but I understand they are supposed to be rather tough.

As for play time, I played through the campaign twice and I've actually spent more time in Career Mode now than I did in both campaign runs together (and I'm still only halfway through my 1200 career mode days) - so in terms of hours of fun this DLC was a great investment.

I don't care much for melee, so the Hatchetman gets a pass, and I love LRMs, so I didn't care for the Crab either... But the Cyclops, a 90 ton mech that can be given decent firepower and gives +1 initiative for the whole Lance, that I love and exploit to bits. As soon as I get one it never leaves my lances. Paired with that +1 init from tactics (most of my mechwarriors have that), it makes my assault mechs act in the same initiative round as medium mechs, which usually lets me focus fire on some heavy or assault threat and remove it before they even act (comms systems and called shots are great for that).

All in all I definitely recommend this, no drawbacks here (aside from the price, which I thought was fair but I understand there are people annoyed with it).

Harebrained Schemes is quickly turning into my favorite game Studio.

I was waiting eagerly for Shadowrun Returns, kinda ready to be disappointed because I had such high expectations, but when I finally got it (even before they made further improvements) the game actually surpassed my expectations and I loved it and all the sequels. Then I heard about Battletech and I doubted I'd enjoy it as much as their Shadowrun games, lightining striking twice and all and I don't even care so much for the Battletech universe as I do about Shadowrun. So I only bought it now, in the Halloween sale, and oh boy, was I wrong. I liked it even better than Shadowrun and for the next week I played the campaign for way more hours than I probably should have.

The build choices for mechwarrios, mechs, lance and even for your "base" are all meaningful and allow considerable variation in play style (even though it seems there are some optimal choices), the turn-based combat is tons of fun, the story is quite nice, and the artsy cutscenes with the great music and voice acting are just amazing, even the time for space travels, which I understand many people didn't enjoy, I found pleasing, atmospheric and sort of a moment of relaxation between missions.

I didn't care so much for the random events during space travel (though I wouldn't call them much of a bother), neither for the long loading times (at least in my system) - but I really did not need to load saves often, so that wasn't much of a problem either, but if I had to pick a few points to complain about, those two would be it.

I definitely recommend this not only to fans of Battletech but to fans of turn-based strategic combat and of sci-fi in general.

I had tons of fun finishing this game and didn't run into any bug despite it being 18 years old. It's even still getting updates (such as versions for Linux and Mac and Steam Trading Cards). Definitely recommend.

This game was tons of fun. The cold war period was a great match to the XCOM universe, the story is nice, the action is fun but not crazy or reflex based (but very much based on staying behind cover) even though you control one character directly and send commands to another two squadmates, there is character and team evolution and meaningful choices for that with the 4 classes for your squadmates, each with different skill trees. There is no base building or tech research, instead tech improves by finding it in missions. I rather liked that there were some "missions" you could send recruits that were not in your squad to work on and bring rewards (including new recruits) and that sending them in those missions would also level up the recruits. All in all a very fun game. If I have to pick a negative point, I will mention that sometimes the AI decides to send some member of your squad running towards some crazy place in combat, which sometimes can be annoying and require more micromanagement than I care for, but I quickly learned how to place them and command them to avoid that most of the time and the crazy movements ended up happening seldom enough that they didn't bother me much.

The game has no screen resolution option and picked a weird resolution, so I had to change the resolution for everything to be able to play. It has a save button but it doesn't seem to do a lot since there's no load button. I guess it's supposed to be a game about choice, since there's little else you can do, but the choices seem to help very little and often have to be made with little information. All in all, something I decided to take a risk on during a sale while it cost 90% less but even at that price it's not for me, I don't recommend it.

The game was lots of fun. Playing on normal difficulty was just right for me, challenging enough (with several retries in some spots) without being frustrating. Working with each dwarf solo was already fun for me (especially the stealth specialist whom I thoroughly abused the game with) and playing with them all together even more so, thanks to the pause feature.

I've been staying away from most action games for years, focusing mainly on RPGs, but this game was great enough to make me retrain and enjoy again my ancient skills in platformers, puzzles (including those requiring the use of companion skills), bullet hells, sidescrollers and beat'em ups, with a bit of fighting and rhythm games throw in to spice things up as well. There were tactical RPG battles too and lots of card game playing, all within the framework of a great time travel RPG story with good characters and beautiful art (in gameboy, 8 bit, 16 bit and 3D styles). Depending on how rusty you are, some action portions of the game, and some puzzles, can be frustrating for a while (even at the lowest difficulty) only to cause that rush of satisfaction when you finally beat them. And there's enough variety of classical gameplay challenges that they don't get old. Difficulty adjustment changes things in interesting ways, can be tuned at any point in the game and is usually enough to keep things interesting. This was also the first game I ever got all achievements for (and I played the last half of it with my right arm in a cast!). I did it before the final boss fight, but you can actually go back to the game after it's over to wrap things up if you want. All in all, unless you really hate even small and well-rewarded amounts of frustration while playing, you really should give this game a try, particularly if you played those classics (and even if you, like me, think you no longer enjoy those).
