I've only knew about the bad launch before buying this game but decided to give it a try because so many years passed and I'm /really/ glad I did it.
A lot of changed during those years, the graphics and mechanics improved, the game gets updated quite often bringing new things to do and new things to learn. The story is amazing, the atmosphere quickly pulls you in making you forget that you had to deal with an important quest story and it is so fun to just explore the universe, to get to know backstories of other races, to become a merchant or even an outlaw, smuggling contrabands to other systems. Also the community is amazing, the friendliest people I've seen in any video game, always happy to help you by providing tips, coordinates or giving rare items.
There are some problems of course, the planet generation gets a little bit boring after a while, there are some mechanics that just don't do anything and some things are annoying but it's still worth playing. I really recommend checking it out.
