EDIT: Take note that Square actually fixed a PC port due to player outrage. The game is 100% worth buying now.

Chrono Trigger is my favorite game of all time...I still have my SNES cartridge sitting on a shelf, in full display for all those who enter my home...

This version is, at best, a very "meh" port of the iOS/Android version of the game. It is a straight port with little to no changes (even some of the UI remains from the mobile version). I think that is what defines a game as a "lazy port"...The Android version (never played it on iOS, so can't speak to it) had some major issues (it operated like a console game, it legit would close the app if you turned the screen off or tried to do anything else on your phone, and there wasn't a way to quicksave, no cloud save support, etc).

The funny thing is, SE updated the mobile version to a completely functional state after a couple years or so of fans telling them their game was broken...but they only updated those games so that the port to the PC would be of sufficient quality. They actually put work into the mobile version, and then straight ported it to PC. Instead of doing the right thing and fixing the mobile version to function like it should have since release day, and releasing a seperate PC version that at the very least had it's own UI...They chose the most illogical route possible and FINALLY fixed the mobile version, and decided that was enough to port it to PC. I think the only change to the PC version is when you start a new game and it shows you what keys do what...someone correct me if I'm wrong or have missed something.

That being said...it's still Chrono Trigger. The game is fully functional, the controls are fine (not having any issues on my end that some others are luckily). The tiles can be kind of weird in some areas, but honestly, I don't really notice them a whole lot. The sound is fine, the music is fine. The weird graphics filter reminds me of Znes filters...but I understand to a degree why there is at least kind of a need for some type of filter (the game isn't really HD...gotta do something I guess).

But the game does work, and the issues it has have upset a lot of people, but I think some would agree with me that at least some of the weird technical issues would be forgiven and the game may even have a better rating right now if it weren't for one thing;

This is Chrono Trigger. One of the most celebrated and cherished games of all time. And for reasons I will never understand...Square has continually took a Black Tyrano sized dump on this franchise. I will not go into the reasons why, as I'm sure most of you already know them. Honestly, at this point, I expect this kind of thing for FF PC releases, and I think we've all kind of come to terms with that...

This further shows the disconnect SE has had with the Chrono series of the past 20 or so years...They literally thought they could get away with treating this game like they have been treating Final Fantasy games on PC...Had they paid any attention the last couple decades, they would have known that releasing a bad port of Chrono Trigger would be met with extreme backlash...

That being said...the game works, is fully playable, and I honestly don't think newcomers to the game will completely hate the UI (they probably won't like it all that much though), so I'm leaving a postive review (because god forbid Steam implement a neutral score). If the game didn't work at all, I'd give it a "No". This is like the opposite of reviews you see on Steam where people rate a game as Not Recommended because they can't get it to run on their potato computer when 99% of all other players can run it just fine. This game is playable just fine, and most of the reviews are coming in negative because of SE's business practices and are based on the expectation that maybe, just once, Chrono Trigger would be treated differently.

TL;DR: The game works just fine, UI is extremely meh at best. Recommending because it is fully playable and is still Chrono Trigger, all the core elements are still there. SquareEnix sucks, would not recommend them.
