Better than real gambling

The moment to moment gameplay is great. It feels fresh, yet familiar. It has some kinks to iron out, such as melee being somewhat wonky, but nothing major. The weapon sandbox is varied, but tight. All weapons have a function, and are for the most part satisfying to use (except maybe the pulse carbine, which is pretty lackluster). The vehicles feel like they die a bit too fast, and the handling is different from past games, but they are still fun. 343 really knocked the gameplay in this one out of the park.

However:

• The whole cosmetic and challenge system is greedy, FOMO garbage
  Armor pieces and coatings can only be applied to a specific armor core. Oh, you bought a cool coating for your Mark VII core? Well that paint will not stick to Mark V, so ♥♥♥♥ you, buy it again. You want to use Carter's helmet on the Mark VII core? Nah, no can do, because that would make too much sense. Oh you want to use this emblem you unlocked on your spartan, guns, and vehicles? Sorry, gotta unlock all three versions separately. Want to color your spartan white? Well then I hope you bought the Zvezda armor bundle in the shop for 20$. You don't see it in the shop? Yeah it was only available for a week. When does it return? Who the ♥♥♥♥ knows. Better buy stuff right now!
  
  But say you went for the battle pass instead. The "Heroes of Reach" battle pass. With noble team in it. And some other reach armors. Well, even that isn't even complete. That combat knife that was present on EVERY reach armor piece? Yeah it's not there anymore. There's knives in the shop though, so swipe that card, buddy! You thought you would unlock all of Emile's and Carter's armor, since you unlock their kits after all? WRONG, Carter's Commando shoulder and BOTH of Emile's shoulders are not present in the battle pass. Because if they were, 343 couldn't monetize these fan favorite pieces, and that would make corporate sad.
  
  You still might want to level up the battle pass, though, since there are as many as 66 free rewards (40 of which are challenge swaps btw...)! Cool, just do a bunch of challenges that incentivize you to play in sub-optimal ways, and often rely on RNG. Oh you need to get 10 kills with the pulse carbine? LOL GG hope you have one of them challenge swaps at the ready. You need to complete slayer games? Best I can do is 10 matches of oddball in a row. Oh you need to win a game of CTF and finally queued into one? Well too bad 'cause one teammate left immediately since it wasn't slayer, and another is only trying to get mangler kills. Then when you finish all your regular weeklies you get the final ultimate challenge of the week, which might just ask you to win 17 games. With a win rate of 50% that's 34 games played, and will take about 6 hours. Oh you already won 17 games while doing your other challenges? Too bad so sad do it again.
  
  
• Can't really choose what game mode you want to play Not enough playlists
  You essentially have 4v4, ranked 4v4 and Big Team Battle playlists, each with a mix of game modes. Can't choose to play only slayer or objectives. No Free For All. No slayer variants like SWAT or Shotty Snipers. No Big Team Heavies. No silly modes like Grifball or rocket race.
  
  edit: An update have since added team slayer, FFA, SWAT and fiesta. Still no objectives only playlist, silly modes or differentiation between game modes in ranked or BTB.
  
  
• Custom games are broken
  Lobby leader changes at random. Custom games settings aren't always saved. You can't set both the map and mode, only one at at time? Classic custom settings like spawning with random weapons are absent. At least you can play some staple modes like infection, right? Well...
  
  
• No infection
  There's no infection. In Halo. What. The. ♥♥♥♥.
  
  
• No forge mode for several months post launch
  Even if they fix the custom games, the lack of forge mode is really disappointing. This is something that 343 has said wouldn't be here at launch, but it is still disappointing. It doesn't help that so many other aspects of the game aren't as good as they should be, making this exclusion hit harder.
  
  
• Theater is a mess
  You got a sweet overkill, stuck someone from across the map, or went on a sick spree and want to share it with your friends? Don't even bother.
  
  
• No coop campaign at launch
  This has been in literally every. single. Halo. game. since. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. 2001.
  
  
  This could have been one of, if not the, greatest Halo games of all time. As I said at the top, the gameplay is awesome. It's fun and exciting for all Halo players, whether you're new to the franchise or you've been around since CE. But everything else about the multiplayer is bad. 343 has said that they are listening and that they will work on the game. But come on. Anyone with half a brain could have seen that this isn't good enough. I love Halo, have loved it for a long time, and I want to love this one too. But I can't. Not in its current state. It's too greedy, and it feels like everything is made to extract as much money from the player base as possible first, provide a fun gameplay experience second.
  
  343, fix your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game.
