One of the best id Software games of all time and my personal favorite, only issue is it's barrier for entry is pretty high. This is one of those games where you may have to watch some tutorial vids to understand it's nuances. But I believe it is more than worth it, Quake Live is an incredibly simple yet balanced and endlessly replayable multiplayer shooter that has kept me coming back for around 6 years now. The small but tight knit community gets a bad rep but in my experience they have been nothing but helpful (shoutouts to the guys who taught me to bunny hop when I was like 12) and full of... interesting characters. It's like the CS:GO community but more on the wacky side of that community than the side that makes you hate yourself.

One thing to note is this game is terribly buggy on modern PCs, and unlike previous games in the Quake series, there is no source code to create bugfixed versions from so you just sorta have to find tweaks. The most infamous bug being the game straight up won't launch from Steam on Windows 10 for some reason, if this happens to you, right click on Quake Live, go to local files, right click on the game exe, go to properties, and set the Compatibility Mode to Windows 7 or 8, and it should run just fine. There's still a lot of quirks with the game but none of them are game breaking. Make sure you don't have a controller plugged in because sometimes that messes up the UI.

Quake Live desperately needs one last bugfix update but I don't assume we'll get one anytime soon with Bethesda and SyncError being mostly focused on Quake Champs, but if you know how to get it running and understand some of the less communicated aspects of how the game works, it's a blast. Diabotical may be a better option in 2020 however.
