Early Access Review
Probably my favorite base building game! I admit, when I first started the game, I almost quit; I was panicky about surviving so much that I was too anxious to do much exploring! Once we had figured out soups though, and got an okay-enough base to venture out from (which took maybe a couple of hours) I started to feel a lot more confident about going out and discovering the facility!

The game really rewards you with good crafting upgrades which make survival (my main initial fear in the beginning) a breeze. It's nice to come home to a well-furnished and organized base, and it feels great to venture out into the wilds to bring things home!

I admit I usually like base building games with a lot more control over the design and aesthetics of your base, but I actually find the constraints of base building in AF a total relief. There's enough to make things look kind of homey, but there's not too much that you end up bogged down trying to make everything perfect. And really, I think that adds to the atmosphere of the game; you're a bunch of new-babby scientists stranded stories underground, you don't really have the means or the inclination to be setting up beautiful, aesthetic bases!

I also think the story in AF is both extremely fun and compelling, which is always a bonus in base building games! I feel like you're lucky if you get any story at all in base building games, let alone one that is both fascinating and genuinely funny. You definitely have to go looking for the story, but there's plenty there if you're willing! The emails often make me laugh, and I'm always excited to run into a Dr Manse recording. I try to read all the lore entries, too!

The voice acting strikes a great balance between fitting the setting and being hammy enough to be great. It's great when characters you've seen before pop up throughout, and always a little sad when they disappear from their last location.

Also, it can be genuinely scary! As an aside: I scare pretty easily. But I do love horror games!

All in all, I think my boyfriend and I are getting close to the last bit of content that's out with EA, and I'm crushed to be coming up on the end. This game has been consuming my thoughts for awhile now, and it's absolutely phenomenal, even unfinished. It's definitely worth the price as I've gotten a ton of time out of it and would absolutely love to play through from start to finish not long in the future once it gets a full release!
