I'm not the biggest fan of the shooter game genre, I'll admit. It takes a fair bit to garner my interest in any game of the genre, and I admit I originally brushed off Helldivers 2 as another AAA FOMO filled cash grab of a game that only barely functions on launch and even long afterwards.

But then I watched a gameplay video of this game. I don't exactly know what, how nor why the gameplay I watched enraptured me as much as it did, Hell, I still can't really figure out why now, but there's just something about this game that strikes all the check boxes in my Goopy Goblin Game Brain™ which I'll try to put into words.

It's the exact same kind of fun as I get from the likes of Deep Rock Galactic, though instead of a handful of classes with their own Weapons and Traversal Tools you instead have an entire arsenal of Weapons, Armor and Stratagems to customize how exactly you get by from Mission to Mission, Bot to Bot, Bug to Bug. The gameplay loop is satisfying, and though some environmental details and structures can border on the edge of repetitive as of writing anyway , none of that takes away from the general fun each Mission tends to hold through its objectives, enemies, and the general gunplay.

I used to struggle with trying to phrase exactly what I was wanting from the shooter genre in terms of gunplay, the weight of each weapon and the fact that you can not just immediately snap yourself and blast something in front of you with practically everything but the Sidearms is immaculate. The guns feel punchy but not sluggish, the Support Weapons and Stratagems are all satisfying to both use and input (I highly recommend rebinding your Stratagem input keys to Arrow Keys if you're playing on Mouse and Keyboard it is a LIFESAVER sometimes with just being able to move while inputting stratagems.), and the roster of Enemies on both the Terminid and Automaton fronts are all extremely satisfying to blast away at and blow chunks out of.

I highly recommend getting Helldivers 2. It is a blast to spread Managed Democracy with both friends and randoms alike, and it's asking price is less than the tRiPlE a StAnDaRd. If you do decide to get the game, make sure your loadouts are what you have the most fun with; whether its Meta, silly, whatever it is, as long as you are spreading the will of Super Earth with your fellow Helldivers, that is what matters at the end of the day.
