I've had this controller for a while now but it isn't something I've used too often. The reason isn't that it's a bad controller, it's actually quite comfortable and has one of the better analog sticks I've used. The reason I don't use the controller often is that it's inconvenient to do so.

This controller will ONLY work through Steam. This is something I wish I had known before purchasing it, but it's such a ridiculous limitation that I hadn't even thought to check. Although it installs its drivers upon being connected, it doesn't respond as a generic controller as you'd probably expect. Instead it acts as a mouse and is not detected as a controller by any software outside of Steam. It's very disappointing, since the right touch pad is very nice and works well as an analog stick alternative.
Until this controller functions without Steam running in the background, it's going to be that much more inferior to every other controller available.

Some people may suggest launching all of your software through Steam to get around this limitation, but not all software plays well through Steam. And even then, it's a step that should not be necessary.
For this reason, I cannot recommend this controller.

On Linux there's a lightweight app called sc-controller you can set to autostart on boot. You don't need Steam Client running in the background then. Maybe you can install it on Windows somehow, that would be something you need to do only once.

Thats why its called a *steam* controller, not a controller.

You can literally run anything through steam. It just makes a shortcut in the app. This is a ridiculous complaint.

It looks inconvenient at first sight, but if you use the "add a game" button to link non-steam programs and games, you can actually use the controller with them. You can edit videos with the controller, or play with emulators (emulators are legal; gamecopies might not, depending in how you got the files).

i would also like if steam offered a separated application to run the controller and customize the big picture mode, but the concept is very experimental, so what currently can be done is to write them ideas to improve it.

So outside of all the people bandwagoning and dogpiling, I have a legitimate question. Have you tried using something like GloSC? While it's not "official" by any means, there are ways to get this controller working pretty well outside of Steam.

That said, because you can run any game through Steam, I don't really see why this is such a big issue.

"How did you think that it would OBVIOUSLY work with others as well? It's a steam controller; it's sort of in the name that it's made for steam"

Just acknowledging this as the most moronic remark in a thread that has been extremely stupid thus far.

XBOX controller
PLAYSTATION controller
STEAM controller

Remember how those 1st 2 only work in the devices they have in their own name? No? Because that's not a thing at all, you absolute gronk.

do you research things before you buy into them?

3: another pointer is the fact that the creater of the game must allow steams controller to function with their game....if they don't ...well theres nothing steam can do about that
Alkemyst Raiyu 28 Jun, 2017 @ 8:26pm
(please read second) that dont work with their controller....but thats literally all steam is...literally a place to buy games...they arent a game developing company (as of current)
