There are different creatures patroling the abandoned stations and in the darkness of the deep ocean. The gameplay is hard, scary and also a pretty long campaign. There is mod & steam workshop support which gives you various more levels to play through or gameplay tweaks & changes. I recommend "Mavs Hard Mode" from steam workshop, which increases enemy encounters and the general difficulty. It has even a gamemode that removes your savegame when you die lol.
