I tried to be patience, I tried to be nice, but this game was ridiculous. Maybe the second one is better, but as for this restarting at a checkpoint after going through a bunch of impossible crap is not my cup of tea. I'm not a quitter, but this game is certainly not for someone with little patience.

To me, this is one of the best racing/crashing games there are. I can say with confidence this game is a lot better than Burnout. (2023 update: there is a little glitch where the xbox live system sort of messes with the profile. There is a fix for it somewhere on Steam forums. I managed to get it working - will post link when I find it).

Although burnout paradise might seem like the best crash and do work games out there, Flatout Ultimate Carnage does give it a solid challenge. I like the unique approach that was taken towards the circuits. It is a little slow going at first as the cars do not have that much power, but over time when certain upgrades kick in and money starts flowing, so do the hits. I find the challenge to get to first place is fun. If your like me though and like smashing cars instead of racing, you still get your fair share of credits towards savings for a new car or improvements to a current one. At first (as I've said) when you play the crashing is slow, but upon purchasing your second car (venom for me) you'll get into some fun crash dynamics. If you go fast enough and hit a stationary object hard enough, your character will come flying out of the car. Yes, you lose time and maybe your place in the race, but you get turbo the more time you are air born! Unlike burnout, this game strives on continuous hits. In burnout, you hit a car once and you are able to send it flying.

With Flatout, you're going to need a better reason to send someone on their way. Hits are decent when racing throughout on straightaways, but coming up on a turn serves the best opportunity to deal a lot of damage. Nitro is available and refills every successful hit or jump that is performed. Nitro adds that sweet satisfaction when coming into contact with another car. The animation and feeling they have created when coming into a collision especially when holding the nitro button down, was done absolutely right. One player racing modes do not feel like a grind and the thought of boredom doesn't dare prod it's head.... until you complete the 3 racing classes and the last "open" class is available. By then, unless you are a hardcore fan, you may stop playing with such a dedication. A great addition to the game was the mini-games section which includes derby's, launch your guy out of your car into bowling pins, launching your guy into a soccer net... you know the regular stuff you see in the news paper saying that video games take it too far. The mini-games add a great depth to the game, and offer an alternative to racing. Absolutely nailed it here. The AI is also a dangerous threat at any time. I thought I was crazy, but some of these buggers will go off course then come flying back in off a jump. They all feel different and they all feel like they want to race. They do of course, want to hit you, but it doesn't seem one sided to the point where the player is becoming frustrated due to being targeted all the time.

The graphics are appropriate for a racing game, neither over the top or too cartoon-y. The fact that they made it possible to destroy the starting gate is amazing. There is a lot of breakable and explode-able objects found throughout each map. This alone makes it stand out from a lot of other racing games. Sounds are good overall while crash sounds are seem to be on the spot while engine sounds are satisfactory (and vary). Music seems to be really heavy into the pop rock.

FOR FUTURE FLATOUT GAMES : The only way they could have made this game better is adding local co-op into the mix. There is a two player mode in the mini-games section, but no one likes passing over a controller to play. Having multiplayer online should be mentioned as it ran smooth for me when needed.

ScreenShots :

The AI sometimes for fun likes to hitch a ride on someone else's car

The map designs are quite unique and have a lot of hidden paths within them

I'm really not joking when I mean the AI like to get creative

I just turned slightly and next thing I knew, I was getting smashed

If you hit something hard enough, your character goes flying from your windshield

At the start of every race, a flying camera takes you around the track to familiarize yourself

What I like about the game the most is that the environment can be broken and manipulated

Alternate route part 1

Alternate route part 2. I've seen AI's try and successfully take this route while others biffed it

XCOM : Enemy Unknown is a turn based 3D top-down shooter based on a grid system with RPG elements thrown into the mix.

The approach this game has taken seems a little more unique than other turn based combat games. It's a turn based chess match that goes on between you and the computer. Throughout the game you command a base and can research aliens for better technology or understanding, add new departments/building to the base that in turn effect production or improve fire power, and train new units. Such things like plasma snipers that are much more accurate, or jet packs to move efficiently. This is essentially the RPG element that adds an extra depth to the game without it jumping simply level to level. Not all technologies are guaranteed to be studied or recovered. If you do too much damage to an alien, you can very well destroy the body and the weapon. When pursuing the aliens, you have the option to choose which country to intercept them in. Obviously depending on who you've helped will determine their stance with the XCOM organization. Every time you end your turn, there could be an invasion, it could simply stay quiet, or there could be a chance for one of your fighter planes to intercept an alien craft. In-game when fighting, you have the basic choice to move a character, tell them to take cover and keep their head down, attack, or be prepared to attack a moving target. The lastly mentioned option is extremely helpful when making advancements in dangerous or unknown areas. The game does a great job notifying you of movement patterns and the amount of cover available at certain areas.

Graphics are absolutely on point when it comes to this game. It's not the greatest or finest of graphics, but their choice of style absolutely goes with their theme. Sounds are appropriate for the setting, and sounds of aliens can be heard. If they are heard, characters do react to that sound. I must commend the guy who did the camera angles in this game, absolutely well done. The camera zooms in and let's you see (over the shoulder) what the characters see.

Overall a good game and can be very difficult at times if you make the wrong move (so save a lot with multiple slots)! It was a fun game but I felt after playing a good campaign there wasn't much else to play. Challenging a buddy to a shooting chess match is always fun though.

For what it's worth, I hate turn based games. I managed to make it through this one and actually came back to finish it.

Payday is a game involving four individuals who do heists in order to gain money. These heists can be anywhere from robbing a shopping mall, to an armored truck.

This can be really fun with friends or can be annoying with randoms (though sometimes you can make new friends). No matter what the case, it breaks through as an awesome game. I should give you a heads-up : playing with AI players is significantly harder than playing with people who are able to establish their own plan. AI's will casually stand around unless you provoke the situation and everything starts going into alarm. Payday 2 feels like an arcade which is nice to come back. If you play the heck out of it though it might get a bit annoying doing the same missions again and again unless you buy DLC.

Either go in quiet and try to rob a bank/house/jewelry store or storm the place and take hostages. The game has perks where you can find wooden planks and bar windows or lead hostages into a vault with you (just in case a buddy gets arrested and you need a hostage trade). The police become harder to hold off the longer you take in your heist. Expect basic police officers to come for you first, but the SWAT or even army may soon be called in to take you out.

Would be my regular good game 8 but if you don't have DLC it can be a limitation. Local co-op would've been nice too!

Not in a million years did I think a game this simple could be so fun. Being a boarder security guard just reached another level of awesomeness.

Just as the trailer shows you check passports - but it gets progressively harder over the course of time, not to mention interesting. The trailer literally nails what the game is about and does a good job of it. I found myself playing for an hour easily the first time I played. It literally delivers what it is designed to and isn't meant for a person who cannot sit still and analyze the finer details required to meet the games challenge demands. I like it as it forces me to pay attention. There are surprises in the game and nothing works exactly as it's supposed to. You may be offered a bribe half way through the game, and if you take it, you may get away with it. However, you may get caught down the line and then thrown in prison. Subsequently, you must try your best to keep your family alive. Money pays for heat and health needs of the family. Upgrades are also available for the booth, as well as your dwelling. You will run into an assortment of characters (to say the least) that will keep you on your toes.

Graphics are basic. Is this bad? Not at all as the person who did the designs was extremely careful in what they were trying to achieve. Sounds do not have much of a variation, but I guarantee you'll be repeating what the guy on the loud speaker says every time you click it.

This is most likely the only indie game I ever recommend to friends.

Prison Architect is a game that allows for a bit of insight into how a prison functions.

The game is a bit buggy but none the less playable if you follow some strict rules to meet grants. One bug that is annoying is a loan grant that restarts every time you re-load a saved game. Grants essentially are goals that you have to attain in order to receive a lump sum of funding.

Game play includes ability to make kitchens, laundry rooms, prison cells, solitary confinement, guard outposts, offices for accountants/warden, close circuit television (if fog of war is on), woodshop (for prisoners to work in), classrooms, yard and a lot of other specific room types. Planning your prison is actually easy as the game let's you overlay a shadow zone for future rooms. When building certain zones such as prison cells, they need to be a certain size as well as need certain furniture to be considered of use. So, a jail cell would need a toilet, a bed, and at least a 2X3 (tiled) area. Variation in staff is also a consideration of the game as prisoners and guards alike can become hurt. Doctors need to be hired to ensure proper health of all pupils within the prison. Other staff is available such as chef's (to cook for the prisoners), accountants, and even K-9 guard units. The game can get pretty serious as shotgun guard units can be introduced. Guards can be given patrol routes or can be assigned to designated zones. This is actually a very nice feature in-game that helps you quickly cover zones that need an increase in supervision. Prisoners themselves need down time and rooms with pool tables, TV's, or telephones to entertain them. As the head of the prison, you are able to put it on lock-down and are able to call a strip search of each prisoner at anytime. They also need conference tables for when they have visitors! If you like small micro-managing things like this, you'll definitely like the game.

The art style of the game definitely sets it apart from other games. Triple A graphics aren't here, but doesn't mean there is any shortage of differentiating between a sink and fridge. Sounds are decent; if there is a fight, you'll hear it.

Game is fun but can be repetitive after a few times playing.

When it comes to medieval games, this is definitely one to have in your library. It goes on a cheap sale price so be sure to keep an eye out for it!

This game literally throws you into action and provides you with more than a simple swing the mouse and chop someone. The game has an awesome fighting engine. It's accurate and very rewarding while playing. What sets this one apart from other hack and slash's is the way you have to be facing the enemy to block or attack (and even dodge). On top of that, there are variances in the swings you can engage in. Rolling the mouse wheel backwards allows for a heavy overhead swing, while rolling it forwards provides a front poking motion extending your reach. Left button allows for a swing left to right while right mouse button is to block attacks. There are other swing variances that you should look into as I've set one of my extra mouse buttons as a side swing from right to left. Swing types matter as it could be the difference between hitting an opponent and accidentally hitting your own team-mate (which can be a regular occurrence given the right ignorance). Alternative attacks and different classes mix the game up and can really halt your strategy after receiving an arrow or axe to the head. The best game mode would be Team Objective (raid the castle) as being able to use some of the in game props like throwing torches or using a giant mounted crossbow can be just as fun as the modern day shooters.

Objectives also change as you may be trying to free prisoners one game, another game you may be trying to slay the King's family. Just make sure you don't get a dimwit using the catapult or you and the enemy will go flying. Other modes include team death match, which is two teams going straight for one another, free for all, dual mode (where people go one on one), king of the hill, last team standing and capture the flag. Different classes are also available. There is man at arms, who is the fastest but least armor. Vanguard, who when he sprints, raises his sword over his head and can do a lunge jump attack unlike any other class. Knight, who is the slowest but has the most armor and does the most damage. Last but not least, the archer, who can still fight with a dagger but is better off shooting arrows. Swords can also be swapped in for maces and axes. There are other variances available as well for your other weapons such as throwing axes or mini-explosive fire bombs that burn enemies.

Graphics and sounds are phenomenal. Everything seems to be given a realistic touch and levels take places from beautiful rolling hills to being on top of a volcano. If you get hit, you will see blood. Sounds of metal clanging together or being blocked can be heard throughout the game. When running, players are given the option of pressing "C" to make their character yell. It can get intimidating when 15 players are running after a few guys all yelling at the top of their lungs.

Really fun to play for a while or simply drop in for a quick game. It's learning curve at first is a little difficult but after realizing how the game works get ready for flying vanguard sword attacks.

RATING : 8.3/10

For future Chiv games : adding horses or some sort of vehicle system may be appreciated for a Chiv 2 or some sort of update. There is a nice big open map available, why not make it complete chaos with more disposal or fixed mounted weapons.

ScreenShots :

I hope I didn't block too early

Different classes available in-game

Causing chaos with a catapult from afar

I chose throwing axes as my third weapon of choice to give my character some range

Just a bit of gore
