This developer is crazy passionate about their game and it shows. Every little detail feels like an MMO from the early 00's, right down to the interaction with other players. The game has a level cap of 35 in EA at the time of this review, but its a pretty decent amount of hours considering you can play again with a new class once you hit the soft cap.

UPDATE 5/31: Updating to recommended because my issues were mostly addressed, and to be honest I very much appreciate the devs for moving to an offline game instead of moving to another server model. Old review is below (with marks for fixes)


In queue for about two hours, played for about 40 minutes before I got disconnected and pushed to the back of the queue.
A few items to note from the small amount of time I could actually play:
  • The combat feels pretty good, although you are locked into the character's forward direction +/- about 40 degrees if you try to attack something to your side. This can get pretty annoying when you swing everywhere around the thing you're trying to hit. --FIXED somewhat, I think server feedback had something to do with this because it feels better.
  • Performance is not good, there is constant stuttering with default settings. Changing the FPS cap helped, but the stuttering is still visible when enemies spawn in. --Stuttering is less but still there, I would say manageable at this point.
  • UI is buggy. Preview models don't show up when selecting different equipment/characters, the first dungeon tutorial refuses to go away for 99% of the run, and when you load into the hub for the first time, the unlocked items popup cover the whole intro cutscene to the hub. --UI issues are mostly resolved, I personally haven't seen anything but I'd look at other feedback if I were you.

Riftbreaker is a mix between tower defense and factorio, with an emphasis on defense rather than production. You make a base, get attacked from various cardinal directions, and place down miners to get more stuff. Once you're satisfied that the base you've made won't immediately fail without your intervention, you can teleport back to the 'main' map or go make a new outpost somewhere. All of those resources are shared (and continue to generate/deplete) between maps, so you can throw bases out left and right near mid-game. All of that and your robot can be modded out with new guns and modifiers to forge him into the perfect pesticide machine. The gameplay really shines after your HQ is settled and you're starting a new outpost, because by that point you're no longer starved for basic resources and starting to explore other mechanics.

As for every other part of what a video game is, the story is non-existent, the graphics are great, and the sounds and music are satisfying. Riftbreaker is a great bang for your buck.

Excellent game, and constantly updated. Highly recommended, particularly if you have a lower spec machine.
