bring back reach's progression and customization system and it will be GOTY ez

edited on Feb.28, 2022
Finished campaign on microsoft store version. I have to say that it's kinda underwhelming for a game that has been in development for six years. I don't understand why they decide to not put anything that's happened between Halo 5 and Halo Infinite into the actual game. It would be awesome to have an Infinity escape mission, but no, 343 just wants us to forget whatever happens in Halo 5. Not cool.

Still, it delivers one of the best fps gameplay experience imo. Grapple hook is such a game changer. The game has a great foundation on a technical standpoint, but the delivery of the main campaign story and the lack of updates just made the game feel half-finished. We need forge, more campaign missions, and consistent updates on bug fixes. If 343 cannot deliver on that, I honestly can't see people sticking with the game.

Hades will always be the GOTY of 2020 in my heart.

Amazing soundtrack. I even bought a copy on Bandcamp. All of the characters look and sound awesome. Their respective design and personalities crafted in this game captured the essence from their original tales in Greek Mythology, while injecting the right amount of modern interpretation as well. Conversations with characters are fun and filled with surprises. The story they told kept me invested and fueled my motivation for the next clear attempt.

The whole design of the game is just top-notch. The "Rouge-like God-like" slogan is very accurate. Great progression system. The Punishment Pact mechanic adds great replayability and gives players a reason to keep sharpening their skills. Lots of combos to be discovered. The game at late early-access stage already felt like a complete game packed with content. Not to mentioned the major updates. Can't wait for more.

Will definitely post a comprehensive review in the future. Hopefully.

See you on the surface.

Chill and relaxing. Love the soundtrack. The basslines are too good. Only 3 hours played so far and I'm already into it.

This game has relatively simple mechanics compared to other mainstream rhythm games. Just follow the beat and hit your keyboard. It is easy to pick up this game but as the same time challenging to master. It is probably I am not good at this type of games. I found difficulty higher than 7-star pretty challenging. But in the end, I still enjoy playing the game. The characters and companions offer a variety of styles of play. The music this game has to offer is fantastic as well.

TL; DR: Fantastic. A Must-buy on Steam. You won't regret it.

When I learned that the MCC on PC will launch game by game by chronological sequence, I thought this must be a rushed decision on Microsoft's side. I was willing to wait until the entire package of games are 100% ready for PC. I want my favorite series to be as good as I remember them on consoles, and I want them to be optimized for a great PC experience. Since these games were originally designed for best experience on consoles, I fully expected 343 to take as long as it needs for these optimizations to be done.

I wasn't lucky enough to play the PC flights prior to release, so I was really worried about bugs and unwanted changes, etc. Still, I prepurchased the game like every other fan did. At launch day, I started playing the Reach campaign with a friend on legendary. The game is still as good as I remember it is. I thought the shooting would be a lot easier with keyboard and mouse, but it turns out the big reticle designed for better accuracy on consoles will work against you on PC. It takes time to master those headshots while having to adapt to the descoping mechanic. Without aim assist on PC, the campaign on legendary feels as challenging as it was before. The elites start dodging every time I hit a shot on them. I must pace my shots carefully just like how I did with a controller before. Everything is as good as I remember, except Forge and theater are not here yet. With a launch this good, I guess I’m okay with that, and I will be patiently for the future updates. In the meantime, I can introduce this amazing franchise to more friends without telling them that they would have to buy an Xbox to play the game. It has always been the reason why I can’t get more of my friends to play this game with me. Sadly though, the Reach PC port does not seem to support split screen. You will have to convince your friend to buy their own copy of the game, which should be relatively easy considering the price you are paying for a set of 6 masterpieces in total. It’s really a great value.

Halo Reach is such a good game that I feel like it still holds up to today’s standards. The music in Reach is always a win. Compared to other entries in the series, music in Reach has more tragic and solemn elements, which fits the valiant effort of the Noble team and the fall of Reach perfectly.

The levels in Reach have great variety, just like every other Halo game - vehicle missions, sniper infiltration missions, assault missions, and defending objectives, etc. I really like the space battle mission, and I really want this to be a more regular thing for Halo. Flying a fighter to shoot Covenant alongside with the frigates that we only get to see in cutscenes is just too cool and fitting for the Halo universe. We are talking about future sci-fi and space colonization after all.

I still like how we are paired up with different members of Noble team to walk through different missions. I think it is a great way to build up players’ connections with different characters in this game, since the protagonist is not Master Chief, the one that all players are very familiar with.

Gameplaywise, the descoping mechanic is going to take some time for players to adjust to. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this mechanic on games other than Halo. I dislike the bloom mechanic like most of the players, but it’s not that bad. Just try to pace your shots with patience. Being able to only sprint for a few seconds feels wonky, but I do agree that sprinting doesn’t fit the Halo gameplay too well in general.

One change that I don’t like is the armor customization system. The armor pieces are still there, and they absolutely look way better than those in Halo 5. However, to unlock these beautiful pieces of armor, you will have to go through a system that is basically a battle-pass. You will have to play multiplayer games, earn medals and experience, level up, and eventually get the season points to unlock the armor pieces tier by tier. I dislike this because instead of having a credit system in old Reach on consoles where you can basically just play whatever modes you like and earn credits; you can only play multiplayer to earn points to unlock armor pieces in this MCC version. It also strips away the ability to just unlock a specific armor piece you want, and if some customizations you like are in a higher tier, you will have to unlock all the tiers before the one you want. Good thing is, playing firefight grants loads of experience, which can be very helpful if you want to farm those points and unlock the armor pieces you like.

In general, the Reach PC port is such a triumph, and I enjoy it thoroughly. I hope future updates will come soon, and I can’t wait to finish the fight for one more time.

What time is it?

Edit: There's no new raid this season. Feels sad. Bringing back old weapons and introducing weapon retirement system at the same time just feel conflicting. Why would you limit weapon choices if you really want a diverse meta? I will be spending much less time this season. Here's hoping there will be a new raid in the next one.

Not so friendly for newcomers.
Fun and exciting to play once you get the hang of it.
Customizable guns for different needs.
Takes time to get used to different unique operators.
Learning different maps thoroughly is the hardest part.
Insanely thrilling and satisfying to clutch.
Equally frustrating to get stomped.
Mute and report sweaty nerds and toxic players.
Better with friends.
