For once, the advertising slogans are correct. This is truly "The Game that Revolutionized the Racing Genre" (just disregard that that was a slogan for GTR1). Modern racing sims are still trying to catch up with the level of detail this game had. It still has features that some modern sims can't boast: rain, animated pit crew, full day-night transitions, etc, as well as some features no modern sims have, such as AI singleplayer driver swaps, with an AI that can match your pace and driving style. The AI in general is still very impressive, and despite not being top of the line anymore, it is still much more immersive than most other sims. It even makes mistakes, so you will occasionally see drivers spin off and even full-course yellows sometimes.

This game was very impressive, advanced, and detailed for its time, and it holds up very well today. It has (or had) one of the largest modding communites of any sim outside of Assetto Corsa, and most of it is still active today, fixing bugs and continuing support well past this game's 14th-year anniversary. And if you like late 90's - early 2000's homologation-special GT racing, no other game comes anywhere close. If you missed out on this masterpiece of an early PC racing sim, it would be a criminal waste to not give it a try.
