So far I feel really torn about this game.

The consensus Ive come to is a 9/10 narrative paired with 5/10 gameplay. The fighting is fine, but there is some serious ludonarrative dissonance that I've noticed. Puzzles blocked with arbitrary walls placed in the EXACT spot that would prevent you from completing it easily; Small gates and piles of rubble that Kratos could lift or clambor over with ease; TONS of enemies thrown at you with really weird scaling (Seriously, why can the literal GOD OF WAR not stomp a couple of lizards??)

Because I really just could not jive with the puzzles or the super tanky enemies, I set the difficulty to journalism mode and focused on progressing rather than exploring, and I have to say my enjoyment has gone up immensely.

I understand the problem is me, because most people seem to adore everything about this game, but I think this game is far from perfect. All of the design aspects keep dragging me out of the story. Thankfully it hasn't kept me from continuing, at least not yet. And like I said, the writing is quite good.

Please keep in mind I have over 300 hours in the original cop of the game during this review.

This game is certainly not bad, and I can still have fun playing it. The ethics of SotFS specifically, the movement, the hitboxes, and the level design are all up for legitimate criticism. To be honest, some of the failures in only ONE of these areas are justification enough to not recommend the game, and so I would not argue this game is 'underrated.' If anything, the current discussion seems to allow for little to no criticism of this game, and that you are just a hater if you disagree that the game is a looked-over masterpiece.

Regardless--I tried revisting this game after Elden ring came out. I went on a sort of binge--playing Sekiro and Bloodborne for the first time, and then replaying the souls series. This is the only game I did not finish. The movement feels weird, in a bad way. I've come to learn that the game employs snap points by default, and is only disabled by editing the INI files (sorry console players). The hitboxes are actually quite awful as well, and hits that should hit completely miss; hits that should miss somehow hit you; spells and effects go through walls at random. This is what broke the game for me, and led me to quit, to be completely honest. The issues are more than that too -- The level design and cohesion of the world are lacking, and the game loves to hard-code in aggression such that you are constantly backtracking to a doorway to manage the abscess of mobs the game throws at you. It often feels like that the game thinks that if it can't make it challenging in an interesting way, just add more mobs so they can call it difficult. It is not like this is the only game with this problem: Bloodborne and Elden Ring often throw a ton of mobs at you too. But this is the first game that made me feel punished for even trying to play.

If you are interested in a compilation of evidence that would make these arguments better than I could, please watch the video here. It is not that I am a mindless hater of this game. Again, it can be fun at times, and has some good moments. But this video truly puts into words what I was already feeling, and why Dark Souls 2 has remained unfinished in my souls replaythroughs -- /watch?v=HR3hbaKTVBs&t=1140

Gonna be honest, the game in its current state is pretty good. It's a bit jank, but so was the first one. I haven't encountered very many bugs at all, and the game runs pretty okay, averaging 100+ fps aside from the high population end of missions, where I drop to the mid 50s.

The actual gameplay loop is good, and the maps are well made. A lot like Darktide, there are only a handful of maps, but the randomization of missions and item placements keeps it engaging, at least for now. That, and the promise that Torn Banner will continue adding stuff, I think it's pretty worth it. Not to mention Torn Banner's track record for post-launch updates is pretty good, if Chiv 2 is any indication.

I understand this had a tough launch, but picking this up on sale has given me a lot of fun. The adrenaline of soloing an objective when all your teammates died, fighting tooth and nail just to inch your way forward so you can keep your character progress is awesome in my opinion, even if it is quite difficult.

This game got the sauce
the story sucks like always, but they added a skip button so is all good
Monsters are very fun to fight, combat feels excellent. Better than Rise and better than World*

EDIT: Sadly you cant skip the 'walk along side the characters while they exposit dialogue' missions, which honestly brings the game down quite a bit. The characters are really, really bad. And stupid. But the monsters are cool. Once you reach the open world hunting endgame, it feels quite fun, although there's not much to do once you reach the end. That will of course change in the next year or so, and doesn't change my recommendation.

I also had virtually no performance problems, and the game ran 120 smooth. A few crashes here and there, but nothing consistent or annoying.

My friend asked me to download this and play it with him. He then escaped the room in ~13 seconds and then we uninstalled the game.

I always come back to this game because I forget how bad it actually is. It has everything you would want in a game -- tactical third/first person directional combat, battle tactics, a rags to riches process of becoming your own lord, and hundred-man army battles. What's not to like?

Well it basically ends there. This game feels like a minimum viable product, something they built to show that it was possible BEFORE actually fleshing it out. This game is so shallow, and every time I come back I am reminded just how disappointing this game actually is.

It has so much potential but it is not getting updates that would indicate that the developers care anymore. Somebody PLEASE make a game similar to this, but actually flesh it out. The market is clearly ripe for something with more depth.
