God of War Ragnarök feels like a perfect continuation for the previous game, and a fitting end for the Norse Saga of the God of War franchise.

The story begins nearly three years after the end of the previous game, with Fimbulwinter reaching its final days, heralding the end of all the Nine Realms, Ragnarök. When Kratos and Atreus are visited by Thor and Odin, as foreshadowed in the previous game, they embark on a quest that might lead them to prevent Ragnarök. I wanted to give a few more details here, but I'd be getting into a lot of spoiler territory.

Gameplay wise, I feel it's been improved a lot from the previous game. Kratos begins the game with most of the abilities from the last one, having both the Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos at his disposition. There are, of course, new abilities to unlock using XP earned through battles, both for Kratos and Atreus. And just like in the previous game, you can further customize your gameplay style both with Runic Attacks, and different types of armours to enhance specific stats. Another new addition to this game is certain sections where you'll get to play as Atreus, who has his own moves and special attacks using his bow.

When it comes to level design, it's simply great. While the previous game had a limited selection of realms, in this one you get to visit all Nine Realms as part of the story, and even though Fimbulwinter is on, that doesn't mean they're all covered in snow. As the game itself puts it, each Realm experiences it differently, and some of them look stunningly beautiful; personal favourites of mine being Vanaheim and Niflheim. The open world nature of the previous game has been expanded as well, and some realms even have completely optional areas for you to explore. Speaking of exploration, you'll come across dozens of side quests, collectibles, and all that sort of optional fluff for completionists like me.

In terms of graphics, the game looks superb, I don't think I can extend this point that much; the soundtrack is also very good, and it seems they listened to my review of the previous game, as now the soundtrack is available for purchase!

Then, there's also the matter of Valhalla. Originally a DLC for the console version of the game, in this one it's included from the get-go. I won't go into a lot of detail so as not to spoil the main story of the game, since it takes place after it, but I say it's a fitting epilogue for the Norse Saga, and very worth a playthrough. Keep in mind, though, that it's somewhat different from the base game, having a sort of roguelite gameplay loop. Still very enjoyable, and if anything, it let me experiment with all the different skills and items the game has to offer, as this mode incentivizes you to switch things up in order to progress.

All in all, an excellent game in my opinion, and one I can easily recommend.

This game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ phenomenal. The story, the combat, the world building, the characters. I'd honestly say this is the perfect game. There were so many criticisms you could give to GOW 2018 but this game manages to fix all of them and only make improvements, I can honestly say there is not a single aspect of this game that has got worse. It has been a blast to 100% the base game and I can't wait to get into Valhalla and my god playing this game practically blind with little to no story spoilers has made it one of the best video game experiences I've ever had. Play this game.
