While the game has a cute art style, and is clearly inspired by the old GameBoy Zelda titles, it has none of the depth of its inspiration. During the main game there are a total of three normal enemies. The puzzles are beyond basic, with the most intricate puzzle being a block pushing puzzle very early on. Enemies are boring, and Bosses are equally as uninteresting.

I would give it a 6/10, as the art style is great, and there's clearly the idea of a good game here, but as it is, it commits the cardinal sin of gaming (in this reviewer's opinion). It's just boring.

Just one more hand, I swear.

In all seriousness, this is a wonderful roguelite based around poker hands and altering game rules to best suit whatever luck has dealt you. While I have yet to pull off a combo that I know *must* exist within it (Every card is a face card that gets doubled twice), I have to admit that it is utterly addicting to watch your score continue to climb higher. Even losses don't feel awful, with a quick button press immediately jumping you back into a new run.

I would love to see more decks, more Jokers, and more wacky mechanics added in at a later time, but all in all, Balatro is worth every chip I anted up for it. Definitely a must have for a Steam Deck, and I wish the developers would port it over to tablets or mobile devices, as it would fit perfectly at home on a portable.

As someone who has not made a single microtransaction purchase, played through this game until I accidentally completed it, and am currently on my way through a New Game+ playthrough, I can safely say that most of the knee-jerk reactionary comments about this game are at best wildly over-exaggeration.

This game, for the most part, is a wonderful romp through an open fantasy world that doesn't hold your hand or care if you experience everything. The main story can be completed with relative ease, with a majority of the actual content of the game taking place through the myriad side stories and optional dungeons.

While the optimization of the game clearly needs work, with myself personally crashing about a dozen times during my playthrough, I can allow that it is the one area of the game that I find utterly unforgivable.

I have never had a game do what Dragon's Dogma II has done when I found out where the II had went, and that's all I can say on that safely without spoilers. I enjoy this game, and I will continue to enjoy this game until I have safely found all of the secrets it's hiding.

Let me ask you a question. How much do you know about game design?

Because this game asks you to forget literally all of that.

Early Access Review
This is one of the most polished Alpha tests I have ever played. Incredibly fun, and absolutely in the spirit of the old rogue-likes. The strategies are a bit simple, but I can't say if that's more due to the fact that this is an early build of the game or due to the simplicity of the game.

Overall, a very enjoyable experience.
