If you're into the core COH gameplay from when it first released, this feels much more like what you'd expect from the series after the - to me - big departure of the second installment. It keeps what worked the second time around, like the capturing of sectors by standing in the circle instead of hugging the box, but gets rid of other bad decisions. Gone (at least at this stage) are the different commanders and their linear unlocks, and we're back to a more First-Game style of command decisions.
The gameplay also feels a bit slower again, but some caveats like the way too large UI (particularly noticeable on big screens) and strangely zoomed in camera remain. Other UI and control elements need a bit of work too, like selecting units from within a group not jumping straight to them, making split second retreat decisions all over the map a bit of a tall order.
Other good decisions, like call-ins no longer being resource-"free" (remember Tiger tanks being manpower only, i.e.), were kept in, while the vehicle combat and infantry movement feels like a good mix of both predecessors.

Overall good, with the potential to be absolutely great down the line with more work and a playable italian faction because COME ON how are you going to do them this dirty. Some other bugs are also present but likely to be fixed. I really love my dug-in StuGs turning and doing the tango over its own sandbags :3
Vast improvement over the second one

Update after about a year: It has gotten better in some of the core aspects of the game, but it's overall still a very big missed opportunity. Even after a long hiatus of updates to - finally - push a bigger change and rework out the door, it still feels like too many corners have been cut. The "story" is still laughable, the game is still very grindy (though less than before) and its difficulty curve can still vary too wildly. It improved, but probably not to the standard many fans of the franchise would expect it to be.
With the first big content update just around the corner, it might now be worth a try, though.
And hey, they finally figured out that people who bought the candy from different shops might want to enjoy the candy together, so that's nice. It only took them several months.
TL/DR: tough call between yes/no on the recommendation scale. We really need a "I have mixed feelings about this" button. Volvo pls.

'22 release: it is amazing to me that this supposedly finished multiplayer only game has so many issues and features as well as items items, most of which were used to advertise the game, are either still missing or outright impossible to get with no clear timetable on when to expect them. The glacial pace of updates compared to the many technical issues it continues to have despite being postponed AND tested beforehand is also not a good sign, as is the outright terrible attempt at keeping the target audience appraised and informed of what it is they want to do with the mess they have created. The information players do get is erratic, contradicts earlier statements and parts of the updates are disconnected from the stated goals.

the worst offender is, it has no possible way to play with users from >that other shop< and doesn't advertise this fact clearly and concisely on either store page, website or elsewhere. I realize there are walled gardens everywhere in modern vidya but at least let people know. It is a multiplayer game that, social shut-ins that we tend to be, still would like to play with friends.

Tl/Dr: in this current state, the game is a massive failure. It's got a good game underneath the mountain of bad business decisions, overly ambitious early launch, technical problems and crazy itemization that leaves much to be desired. With enough time and effort, it might become good.

Early Access Review
It has seen a lot of changes since appearing on Steam, most of them good, some of them mediocre, very rarely were they bad - the game became increasingly buggier though, but with the track record of how they're trying to remedy the issues, I don't see why this won't be a success upon full release
At this time, it's barely recommendable unless you have a massive throbbing torpedo bulge at the thought of getting to design your own ships.
If ships aren't really your thing, it's a big fat miss.

Still has much, much, MUCH unfinished business. Still depends heavily on player mods offering the much needed depth most players are looking for. Sacrificing all player goodwill by going EGS exclusive shortly before launch didn't help.
But ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ if it isn't MechWarrior and that's just so refreshing to have again.

This is the first game to get all of the VR gameplay elements right. There are other games that do individual aspects better, but Alyx is the only one that makes everything fit and play well.

Visually stunning too, even on relatively tame hardware.

Don't get into this expecting fast paced run and gun combat though.

Got this for free because I own a Vive, but I'd have bought it in a heartbeat irregardless

Had a rough start with several "missing" features, but thank god for Mods
Getting better with every Update and Add-On, this game has amazing potential

It's fun to screw around with courtiers and debutantes, producing extramarital children and ferrying your 16 year old daughters off to another court to marry it to some 50 year old incapable leper pervert to gain an ally. Also, always fun to have your newborn killed so he does not inherit your empire.

10/10 would be tyrant with
