You can tell there was a lot of care put into the development of this game, and if there were a sideways thumb it would be fully deserving of that. But I simply can’t recommend it for two main reasons.

First, the main character movement is lacking any feeing of dexterity. The back step is essentially useless and the lack of a dash or some other option to quickly adjust the character speed makes combat feel very limited and same-y after about 10 hours. Whether or not this limitation is an homage to 8 bit Castlevania games doesn’t make it any less annoying and makes me feel like this could have been a much more fun and engaging game to play.

Second, the last 1/3rd of the game essentially requires a walkthrough. Especially the Aegis armor location, one of the worst examples of poor level design I’ve seen.

I would have liked to give this a thumbs up, but I just can’t. Way too many small issues just keep it from being good, but it is decent.

This feels like a very well done tech demo or a very unfinished full game. The flying mechanics are fun but there just isn’t much to actually do in the world. It’s a sandbox with a couple of basic toys

A thought provoking walking simulator with game-like elements. Play it for the story and atmosphere.

If you're looking for a series of shallow collect-a-thons with aggravating controls and incredibly shallow game play, you're in the right place. The remake appears to be really well done technically, so props to the devs for making it visually appealing but I just can't ignore the underlying 20 year old games. They're boring, very uneven in difficulty curve (late game bosses I could take out in 1-2 tries, but the middle boss of the second game took me literally 45 minutes to struggle though), and just uninspired. I can see how these would scratch the nostalgia itch for people that grew up with these games, but looking back I'm pretty happy I had Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie to play instead of Spyro. It also happened to be a resource hog on my steam deck.

Arise ye tarnished! If you get unlucky like I did with the myriad crashes which gradually lessened over the course of my 175 hours of play time it will really hamper the overall experience of the game, but overall this is still a masterful game and gave me a sense of adventure I hadn't experienced since Skyrim. If you haven't bought it yet, wait for the DLC or GOTY version, and hopefully by then they'll have ALL the bugs ironed out. Looking forward to my second play through.

Still glitchy and buggy, with freezes constantly throughout one of the DLC not letting it fully be complete. The gameplay is still topnotch despite the forced Battank sections, but the stability of this port kills the enjoyment of it.

A deep and enjoyable, if RNG influence, card battler rouge-like with a splash of Hearthstone.

Shoot. Boom. Repeat.
