Checked this game out after hearing positive reviews from some of my friends. Previously, I had only played a couple metroidvanias - Hollow Knight, The Messenger, Guacamelee 1&2, off the top of my head.

So I decided to give this a shot as I was nearing my gloomy, yearly burnout phase.

Coming from recent exposures to the dark, gritty, sombre atmospheres of the souls games, this really was a breath of fresh air. A light-hearted, colourful and silly game that does not leave me with hard-hitting realizations was exactly what I needed.

While I did not think much of it while playing, I loved how different regions transition so well into one another. The only real gripe I have in this department is that some areas were not memorable enough for me to know when to return to - could very well just be a me problem.

The weapon variety is neat in the sense that the wide array is bound to suit everyone's playstyle. Though I found myself sticking to some of the early game guns purely out of preference. The game forces you to utilise all the abilities at your disposal for different puzzles, and makes you think, which I enjoy. But one particular late game ability the enzyme selector trivializes some sections in early portions of the game where otherwise time would be of the essence. Enemy variety and boss design also contribute to making each region feel unique - you can tell they put some thought to this. Music and SFX complement what you see on the screen so it is quite easy to get reeled in!

Definitely worth a shot, seeing that the developers here have really fleshed out their ideas in a convincing fashion. Love how the ending is a proper farewell with factual accuracy too :D

Can't recommend it enough. I got started with this series to fill the void left by the Danganronpa saga, and this left an even bigger hole in me now ;-;

The way the games handle the branching of the storyline with each decision, and how they seamlessly integrate it with the lore of the game is simply genius. Explaining it any further would fall under the spoiler territory, and the last thing I want is to be the cause for someone's inability to experience ZE in it's full essence... Its a storyline that can only work as a video game, or a stupidly huge novel with decision making gimmicks.

The games manage to preserve the feeling of mystery from start to end; throwing various plot points that make next to no sense to you throughout the course of the game which fall into place very well as you uncover more and more info. Couple that with the spine chilling setting, the subtly revealed backstories of all the characters, and the overarching plot, it makes for some of the best visual novel if not video game in general, to be developed.

Personally, the fact that these games break the fourth wall and try to take full advantage of the medium is in itself worthy of bonus points. There are very few games that pull it off very well, and the ZE trilogy make it into that list.

Early Access Review
Solid roguelite, fluid af gunplay with mesmerizing artstyle. It's basically Borderlands x Risk of Rain; a great variety of weapons, and an even greater variety of perks. The game randomizes each part of the stage (limited options though) to avoid making the game feel entirely repetitive, which works as is intended. Overall, a great buy if you're willing to invest a little time in the starting.
